GRATITUDE IS MY MIDDLE NAME

Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

When you live alone, as I do, it is very easy to concentrate on the negative things going on in your life instead of the positive.  I find it robs me of energy and creativity along with less interaction with others.  I also think it has something to do with low se lf esteem. Or how you’ve treated yourself throughout your lifetime

When you live with others you have them to bounce things off.    If you have a job it usually takes at least 40 hours of your time weekly plus commute time.  At least you’re not alone 24/7 .

Henceforth, I want to treat myself  better than I have in the past.  I want to treasure what talents I have and use them in a way that will help others.

You may find that’s easy but if you’ve not valued yourself or your talents in the past it becomes a whole new ballgame.  This becomes a whole new way of life for me.  I’m going to make it a goal to do whatever I can to raise my spirits and enjoy life.    Being a single senior need not be boring or the end of the line.  If you’re not there yet treasure what you have and who you are.  The day may come when you are completely alone and have only yourself to bolster your ego and spirits.

I hope to report these findings with you.  Yes indeed, Gratitude has become my new way of life

I'M BACK!

Without going into too much detail I feel I am ready to start blogging again!  From late August up till today I've experienced a plethora of health problems and did not have the energy or desire to write except in my private journal.

I realize now, more than ever, how precious good health can be.  Without it, the world becomes very small, fragile, and almost empty.  I beg of you if you have good health celebrate it!  I feel you can do anything and go anywhere ff you have good health...indeed the sky is the limit!

In the next few days I expect to write several tidbits that you may also enjoy.  So, stay tuned!

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS!

Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

This year I got to celebrate my birthday two days in a row!  Thursday evening my Tick Talk Toastmaster Club honored me with a scrumptious birthday cake, followed by gifts, good wishes and a beautiful tribute to me from President Pat Partin.  It was all unexpected and humbling.  Thank you all for making it such a special night!  Also it was great fun to see Jack Cummings and Eric Huber again (both former members of Tick Talk).

Last night Pat Partin treated me to a great dinner at Mimi’s.  The salmon was outstanding!  She then presented me with a beautiful necklace that I had lusted after weeks ago!  What a lovely surprise!  I will wear it with pride and honor.

When I got home there was a luscious azalea and homemade cake on my front porch from Bernard  and his family (the man who gives me communion every Sunday).

I feel truly blessed and honored by all this kindness from so many people, particularly since I didn’t think I would make it to this birthday.  As far as I know I am still in remission and life is good!

Again, my sincere thanks to all of you!

I'M IN REMISSION - FREE OF CANCER

Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

By the grace of God I can share good news with you.  Yesterday I visited the oncologist and she read me the report of the PET scan I had in La Jolla last Friday.  I AM IN REMISSION OR, FREE OF CANCER!!!  I can't believe my goo fortune...

The last 8 months have been the loneliest, painful 8 months of my life!  The silence was deafening.   I think I experienced every emotion there is including helplessness!   .

On July 2, 2015 I had a lumpectomy.  A few days later the doctor called and said "Well, we didn;t get all the cancer.  We're going to have to go back in again and you'll be on radiation and chemo therapy (slash, burn and poison)"  I said "No way.  I'll go up to Oregon before I do that!"  Then I called my Wounded Warrior friend, Rob Caudill, and asked him did he know of any alternative medicine to beat cancer?"  .He took me to meet Dr. Paula Shore in Oceanside who has a medical marijuana dispensary.  She prescribed Simpson Oil which I take a capsule nightly.

Then my neighbor, who has tumors all over her body, told me about her alternative medicine "Graviola."  She, and now me, take it 2 x daily.  She said it has stopped her tumors from growing.  Next, since I lost over 57 lbs.  I wanted something to build up muscle.  The oncologist prescribed something that cost $300.00.  I asked for something generic but never heard back from her or my family MD.  Again, medical marijuana came to the rescue!

I truly could not see going the traditional medical route - slash, burn and poison.  I opted for the alternative medicine instead and prayed it would help.  I truly think it has and am grateful I listened to my own voice.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

As 2015 comes to a grinding halt I couldn’t be happier.

This had to be the most challenging year of my life, from ongoing health issues, financial stress and lost friendships.  After being diagnosed with the big “C” I put my life on hold in July which I wouldn’t recommend anyone do.   I declined more surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and opted for some alternative medicine.  Unfortunately, my family does not support me in this action and it saddens me.  But, I feel it’s the right decision for me and I try to live by the motto “To thine own self be true!”  And, as queen Elizabeth would say “2015 is not a year that I shall look back upon with undiluted pleasure.”

The solitude has helped me discover what I’d like to do with the rest of my life.  I’d like to become an advocate for senior citizens.  I never want them to go through some of the nightmares I encountered.  I’m writing a book and borrowing the title “YANA – You Are Never Alone” and dedicating it to them. YANA is a group of senior police volunteers who call on housebound seniors Monday through Friday.  They knock on my door each morning and say “Good morning Miss Carolan, how are you today?  Do you need anything, etc?   It was they who found me on the floor back in February after laying there for 11hours because I slipped and fell on the bathroom at midnight.

Later, Oceanside Police Chief Frank McCoy told a reporter “how lucky the woman on Golden Ridge Drive is to be alive.”  I didn’t know I had fractured my pelvis in two places and was bleeding internally.  Later, I made the evening news on Channel 39.

Assisted living is not what’s it’s cracked up to be and I have volumes to share with seniors, caregivers, E/Rs, doctors, nurses, insurance companies, ambulance companies, etc.  I will have a list of questions for seniors to answer according to their needs and lifestyles.  It is to help them sort through all the red tape and have a thorough understanding of their rights!  Which I did not know…

Instead of setting resolutions (which I break too easily) I am setting goals.  I want to make some concrete plans with guidelines on how to get there, what’s stopping me, and how I can get back on track if need be.  This may involve some speaking engagements too.  Journaling is also at the top of my list which I encourage everyone to do.  The therapeutic benefits from journaling are immeasurable.  I used to teach seminars on Journaling and would welcome opportunities to do so again.

Whatever your goals and dreams are treasure them because without them people can walk all over you and you will never know your full potential.  As Les Brown says “Shoot for the moon!  Even if you miss… you will land among the stars!

Happy New Year!   And may the force be with you!

TREASURE GOOD HEALTH

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

While I may not be able to say “I am cancer free” now, I can say that the cancer has not spread!  Last week I went to Scripps Hosp., La Jolla and Scripps Hosp., Encinitas for a battery of bone and body scans whereby they inject radioactive material into you and then take pictures.   I can say that the cancer has not spread to my bones or organs!  But, the new oncologist I saw recently still wanted me to have surgery and then chemo and radiation therapy.  I declined.

I firmly believe the alternative medicine I’ve taken since June when I first got the cancer diagnosis has a lot to do with my improved health today.  I am indebted to my wounded warrior friend, Rob Caudill, for introducing me to Dr. Paula Shore who prescribed the alternative medicine.  While this treatment is expensive I don’t think you can put a price tag on your health and, it beats surgery.

Also, Rob Caudill has been my rock of support.  I don’t know what I would have done without him for the myriad chores he does for me!    He’s like the grandson I never had.  He also introduced me to medical marijuana after all my doctor approved of it.  Rob is now President of my Carlsbad Toastmaster club.  I also want to thank everyone else who has helped me and/or kept me in their prayers.

Lastly, if there are any female Toastmasters who have breast cancer or, are survivors of it, I’m starting a new, local, support group along with another female Toastmaster survivor.  If you’re interested please contact me at 760-518-6493.

SCAMMERS ABOUND

Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

On August 31 while on-line my computer was hacked into and they tried to relieve me of my savings as well as hacking into my checking account.  Fortunately, Union Bank took swift action and immediately closed my accounts, and notified me otherwise I’d be a pauper today.

While that’s great service it created havoc in its wake, leaving me unable to write checks, use my ATM card to charge for groceries, etc. and, leaving several companies (paid directly monthly by Union Bank) at the beginning of the new month unpaid!   I notified those companies what had happened and that the situation was being corrected.   Unfortunately, I didn’t get all of them and have started to receive some nasty emails from them about non-payment.

In addition to taking my new computer back to the shop to get the virus removed, Union Bank wanted a statement from them confirming that the computer was now virus-free.  That took a few days.  Back to the bank I went to order a new checking account, with new checks. new ID and new password.  The checks just came but not the new ATM card.    So, I still can’t pay bills on-line until the new ATM card arrives.

In a way I feel I’ve lost my identity.  I thought I had excellent virus software and never dreamed a hacker could or would hack into my bank accounts.  This whole ordeal was made lighter by my wounded-warrior friend and President of my Tick Talk Toastmaster club, Rob Caudill.    Since I am not driving my car yet I needed help driving to Best Buy with my computer and then to Union Bank.  Rob sprang into action and took me to straighten out this mess.  I am so lucky to have Rob in my life.  He’s like the grandson I never had.  Always cheerful, upbeat and willing to help regardless of the mess I’m in.  Thank you Rob.  You help me to keep things in perspective.

Being without my computer and unable to email friends was bad enough.  But not being able to pay my bills on-line promptly and now receiving terse emails from companies who have not gotten paid is the worst.

There must be a better way to keep one’s PC virus-free without the hassle of stripping it of all files and taking it back to the factory settings.  Some files I can never replace.  I’d like to hear from you if you have any solutions.

I'M BACK!

I'M BACK!
By Shirley M. Carolan

I'm back and hopefully with a passion!  It's been a very challenging 8 months with each month bringing some major issue to resolve.  Health has been my biggest challenge this year, from broken bones to pneumonia to fracturing my pelvis.  Then in June diagnosed with breast cancer.  Surgery July 2 thy removed a lump but unfortunately they didn't get all the cancer.  Hence I am facing surgery again!

Since I love writing I thought I'd try my hand at writing my blogs again.  It gives me such pleasure to see my work in print where others can also see it and enjoy it and comment if they wish.  What I write will hopefully help others especially where cancer is concerned.  I am turning to alternative medicine to help me in this ordeal.  While it's not cheap you can't put a price tag on your health!

Stay tuned.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A TOASTMASTER MEETING?

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

I am often asked “What goes on at a Toastmaster meeting?  What can I expect? Recently, I had the opportunity and pleasure to write a recap of our Thanksgiving meeting and share it here with you.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me by phone 760-732-0663 or email:  artistwithaflair@att.net.

AHOY THERE TOASTMASTERS!

If you missed last Thursday’s TM meeting you missed a real treat!  It was both stimulating and motivating.  The theme was “Memories” and we started off with a moment of silence for Dan McKeon, our dearest Toastmaster who valiantly fought his battle with cancer followed by a tribute to him.  Poignant it was as each Toastmaster recalled some happy moment they shared with him.

The theme lived up to its name!  Neil Thompson did the first time honors of Table Topics Masters and chose “Mind” as the word of the day.  His questions were both provocative and thoughtful.  Nirav Desai won Best Table Topics and wowed us with his energy and enthusiasm as he told us about his chance enconter with actor Mel Gibson.

Richard Rettig was our solo speaker.  He gave a wonderful  exposition  on the history of marriage and the cultural changes through the years right up to the present.  Many members were shaking their heads in agreement.  His title was “Marriage-What Is Its Future?”    Nirav Desai gave a rousing evaluation and won the Best Evaluator trophy.  Well done Nirav – two trophies in one night!

Pat Partin did a great job as General Evaluator and Amiel Sharon was the Timer for the first time.

Two long term members whom we’ve not seen for ages were Carol Sheckler and Shirley Carolan were present.  Carol looked fabulous with her new hairdo and Shirley graced us with her dry, British wit!  Welcome back ladies!

President and Toastmaster, Richard Jennings, reminded us that Tick Talk will be celebrating Toastmasters International 90th anniversary with a party and demo meeting scheduled for December 4, 2014 at Carlsbad by the Sea.  Preparations are in the works and the event probably will start at 6:30 PM with hors d’hoeuvres, networking, etc.  Be sure to put that on your calendar and do bring a friend.

Lastly, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  One member told us she left Southhampton, England with her family aboard the S.S. America on November 27, 1947 and set sail for America. It was Thaanksgiving Day!

‘Till next time,

Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

WHAT TO DO WHEN EVERYTHING HITS THE FAN! Or, I Can Handle That!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

Many titles came to mind as I wrote this article.  Since I wanted to reach as many folks as possible who might be going through a difficult patch in their lives, especially those feeling like a victim, I chose not to use a fancy title.

Regardless of what you are going through do NOT consider yourself a victim of your circumstances!  Neither are you alone in facing problems because that’s part of being human, even when everything hits the fan simultaneously.  .Just  know that you can’t solve all problems immediately!  Instead work on one problem at a time.  I know, that’s easier said than done as I experienced on a recent Thursday.

First, I was quite distraught because my little dog “Teddy” was acting strange.  He was not eating, drinking his water, urinating, or barking as usual , etc, Then when he wouldn’t get off the bed at 6:00 am to go for our regular morning walk, I knew something was seriously wrong.   After much agonizing I knew I had to get Teddy to a vet.  I would need to cancel my chiropractic appointment  that morning.  As I walked to my office/den to do so I discovered my phone-answering machine was dead and I couldn’t phone or receive messages from there.  I rushed to the kitchen to use the wall phone, whereupon AT&T informed me they couldn’t get a repair man here until next Tuesday!

Then, I went outside to check my outdoor mailbox.  There was an invoice from Bank of America with $7,500.00 charged to my account.   I was stunned since I had not authorized any such charges by a San Diego  medical facility.

Finally I arrived at the vet’s office.  Two hours  later I was informed that Teddy had a 103o  temperature and would need x-rays and blood work done.  I was a basket case.  Later, he was diagnosed as being dehydrated and needed special injections and food.  Naturally, the vet’s bill didn’t come cheaply.  In fact, I staggered under the weight of it..  But, at least I knew he would live and eventually get back to his old self.  It was about 5:30 PM as I walked to my car.  I started it but it too was as dead as a door nail.  AAA was called in to help.  It took another hour for them to arrive and the commute traffic was at its peak.  I finally got home a little before 7:00 pm totally exhausted and  I knew I could not make it to my Toastmaster Club meeting that night.  Somehow things spiraled out of control that day for me.

I want to share some vital things that helped me through a very stressful day:

Firstly, I had to stop myself from storming around the house, gritting my teeth, shouting at Teddy, in a huff, and totally losing it.  Yes, I was totally playing the victim role and giving my power and life force away!

Next, as I prayed to God to help me in my hour of need, I gradually sensed a small feeling of peace.  I began to realize I couldn’t wave a magic wand and solve everything immediately.  But, as the peace grew I knew I could handle anything!  I started to smile at my former ridiculous/negative beliefs and behavior.  .I began to repeat out loud:  “I can handle this”  several times..

Then I worked on one problem at a time and each small success did wonders for my self esteem… Again, I repeated   “I can handle this”    As each problem began to get solved I felt a sense of relief and, I thanked God for his divine help and guidance .  I could not have done it without him.  I was finally able to know and feel that I could handle anything thrown at me without going to pieces!

Furthermore, I began to see a bonus in placing my trust in God’s hands.  I got to see what the lesson was from each experience that I needed  to learn.  Once I gained a handle on my peace of mind I reached for my Journal and started writing what the problems were, how I reacted to them, and how I solved them. This has helped me to write this article and share with you not  to be a victim of your circumstances!  Let’s face it you can’t put a price tag on “peace of mind.”.

In case you doubt this would  work for you and pooh-pooh everything, I suggest you look at the alternatives if you stay a victim of your circumstances.  You wreck your mental, physical and emotional health!

You become a prime candidate for:

1.    Falls
2.    Accidents
3.    Lost relationships
4.    Loss of love from your pet (he/she is probably scared by your erratic behavior).
5.    Loss of energy, drive and happiness  -  leading to depression
6.    A victim of your circumstances  -  you’ve given your power away
7.    An erroneous belief that you can’t  handle whatever  Life throws at you.

Best wishes on solving life’s problems, especially when everything hits the fan simultaneously!

PBS TELEVISION HAS SCORED AGAIN!

 By Shirley M. Carolan

Over the years I’ve watched with pleasure, anticipation and satisfaction the wonderful programs that PBS television brings to America.  I’ve even contributed to their fund raising programs.  The latest program that I am ecstatic about is “Mr. Selfridge,” on Sunday evenings.  I love everything about this show from the theme to the actors, story line and my memories of living in London, England before and after WWII and shopping at this magnificent Emporium!

I was almost 6.5 years old at the beginning of WWII and was consequently bombed out of London but fortunately survived with my parents and twin brother in the English countryside.  I don’t remember much shopping during the war but certainly do afterwards.  Selfridge’s was one our favorite department stores to ooh and aah at while shopping.  It was a place of glitter, like a fairyland, after the end of the war in 1945 and the dreadful rationing we were still on.

At the time I did not know that Mr. Harry Selfridge was an American and the first of his kind to establish a world renowned, successful department store.  He was an inspiration not only to his fellow American store owners, e.g. Marshall Field in Chicago where he got his training, but also the toast of European capitals for his style, creativity and freedom to browse through the wonderful emporium he built.

No story would be complete without some sadness, setbacks or just plain bad luck and “Mr. Selfridge” is no different.  Unfortunately, it is Harry Selfridge who runs amok.  He was a ladies man and an inveterate gambler.  He lost his wife Rose because of his unfaithfulness, although she later died in 1908 from the flu epidemic which ravaged Europe.  Because of his gambling and lavish lifestyle he was asked to leave Selfridge’s by its board of directors.  He met the inimitable Dolly sisters and his gambling skyrocketed.  As a pauper on the street looking at the windows of his beloved Selfridge’s he was arrested.  Harry died a pauper.

The series has not reached this far in the story line and I do hope I have the courage to watch it when it does.  For some reason, Harry Selfridge epitomizes the war years for me because Selfridge’s was so much a part of my childhood life.   I am 80 years old now and left London with my parents and twin brother December 1947.  That was the year that Harry died but we did not know about it then.

I do hope you will watch this wonderful TV program on your local PBS station.

Cheers,

DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY!

By Shirley M. Carolan

Ever since I lost my website last summer I’ve not written any articles for my blogs.  I want to get beyond that disappointment and loss and start writing again on a regular basis.  So here goes.

As the new year approached I decided to make new year’s goals rather than resolutions which I’ve always found too easy to break.  I set three main categories to work on:  Health and Fitness, Writing projects, and, eliminating the Clutter in my life!  Each have daily and or weekly tasks assigned.  My mantra for this year is:  “Don’t Take It Personally!”

What I’m finding out is that my health still needs a lot of patience and work to get back to where I was last September.   It’s been hard for me to accept that my health plummeted so quickly,   making daily living a real challenge.   But now I’m off the oxygen 24/7 and it turned out not to be a blot clot on my lung.  For both I’m extremely grateful.  I’ve even rejoined my local senior center and am enjoying their “fitness room” and all the modern equipment they have.

Patience is also something I’m learning along with not taking anything personally.  I find my “schedule” needs to be adjusted because my energy runs low and I can’t do all the things I’ve planned for that day.  Rather than being disappointed or giving up my goals I thank God for what I am able to accomplish daily!  This way I’ve stopped beating up on myself and am accepting that I am doing the best I can with the resources I have.

Also, I’m learning that just getting rid of the clutter needs organization, an action plan.  It can’t be done just willy nilly.  It also helps to tackle one room at a time rather than a bit here and a bit there.  This goal is something that had to take a back seat in 2009 when I was in the hospital twice with pneumonia and on oxygen 24/7 as well as in hospital with pneumonia last year.  Again, patience is what I need to pursue even this goal.

Toastmasters has been a wonderful outlet for me. In fact, it’s a way of life to me.   I missed a lot time from it last year.   I’m happy to say I’m now back at it, mentoring new people, and winning either Best Table Topics or, Best Evaluator trophies and just participating to the fullest.

Good luck on your new goals!  I hope you have a mantra for this year too?

‘TIS THE SEASON……!

Shirley M. Carolan , ATM-G

Yes, ‘tis the season to be merry and I’m doing just that.  This year I wanted to be more prepared for the upcoming holidays and I am.  No more a bystander but an active participant.  Just before Thanksgiving I stopped to buy some cards and a few poinsettias for neighbors and friends.  I had a wonderful time addressing the cards with messages unique for each person.  Then I wrapped the pots and put each in a Holiday bag and trotted off to deliver them.

First on my list was my neighbor down the street, Gayle, who has been walking my dog, Teddy, for me with her little Shih-Tzu, Maggie.  He’s gone on many play dates with Maggie and has come to love her.  Then on to my next door neighbor, Theresa, who is a very good and considerate neighbor.  Throughout the year she bakes goodies and shares them with me.  Both ladies were pleasantly surprised and it made me feel good to honor them.  The last gift I saved for my friends I would spend Thanksgiving with along with a bottle of cognac.

I am also grateful that my health is finally on an upturn.  To be off oxygen 24/7 and not huffing and puffing my way to the mailbox to pick up my mail, or lying in a hospital bed wondering what the hell happened is like a miracle happening.  I’ve even started back doing exercises at a great fitness room at the local Oceanside Senior Center.  Their treadmills have two small fans embedded in them that can be used during exercising!  How’s that for being spoiled?

Speaking of the Oceanside Senior Center – this week when I visited I admired the lovely Holiday decorations – trees, wreaths, poinsettias, etc. The lady behind the counter asked me if I'd like to have a poinsettia.  At first I was stunned than said “Yes.”   She asked “Red or Yellow?”  Whereupon I said “Red.”  Don’t you know this kind woman gave me two pointsettias to bring home – a red and a yellow one!  How’s that for good luck!

While I still haven’t set up a new web site, since I “lost” the one I had for seven (7) years because of an error with Go Daddy back in August, I’m putting this on my goal list for 2014! I would like to learn how to do this myself and I feel it’s a goal worth my time and talents. I did hear finally from the CEO of Go Daddy, Mr. Blake Irving!  He called and apologized for the “error,” said he’d refund my money and suggested I check out www.archive.org to see if I could pull my website up.  While I still feel a piece of me is missing since I "lost" my website, I am grateful for his call.  It has renewed my faith in corporate America.  Plus, it saves my filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about Go Daddy.

Lastly, this week I put up my outdoor Christmas lights, wreaths, etc. Recently, I bought colored Christmas lights for a change, instead of the all white ones I've had for 13 years.  I really like the difference.  Now I'm deciding whether I should also put out the family of white rheindeer that I have.  H'm.  Next, I hope to finish the calligraphy for my Christmas cards and get them mailed.  Wow, I've never been so early or ready for the holidays - it's quite fun actually.

What's one of the most important things I've learned this year?   I’ve learned that growing older is not for sissies!  So, I’m going to dedicate my time in 2014 to keeping good health, through exercising and diet and to getting more of my writing published.  That should keep me off the streets!  What are you going to be dong?

Now on to spending a wonderful Christmas with friends!  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS!

BY Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

Wow, I can honestly say that this has been an incredible week!  In fact, it was a week when everything hit the fan!  First, I had a dreadful health scare followed by both my telephone and internet access down.  It was a bit scary being incommunicado from friends, relatives and associates.  I reported the phone and internet problems on Wednesday to AT&T and was told a repair man would be at my house on Friday between 8 AM and 12 Noon.  That meant another 3 days of being in limbo.

As I reflected on my situation I realized there was nothing I could do about everything that had happened.  It was time for the serenity prayer to work its magic on my frayed nerves.  In fact, I felt a bit like an alcoholic who had hit bottom and was desperately trying to make sense of things.  I realized then it could be worse and was determined to make the best of everything and stop beating up on myself.

The turning point came as I became aware that there was so much good going on in my life and the inconveniences were nothing and not worth getting in a stew over compared to all the good things.  I found a new joy in my small house, I read vociferously and thought about all the writing I could get done without interminable interruptions!  Why this was truly a blessing in disguise to be cut off from the outside world and totally dependent on one’s own.

Ideas for short stories appeared like magic in a steady stream across my brain.  They seemed so good I don’t know why I never thought of them before.  Then it occurred to me that I was not in a censoring mode but one of acceptance and my horizons had blossomed and enlarged…

Friday the telephone repair man arrived and fixed both my phone and internet service.  He told me I didn’t need to buy the telephone equipment from Radio Shack.  Earlier in the week I ran around between Best Buy, Staples, Wal Mart and Radio Shack looking for the equipment that AT&T told me I needed to have to fix the problem.  I still haven’t recorded my message on my answering machine yet but I am enjoying the peace and quiet like never before.

Folks, I think it goes to show that out of adversity we learn how to be strong, take charge, and accept life’s inconveniences without getting in our own way and coming up with far better solutions that we ever imagined.  The next time adversity strikes I will think back on this week and realize that not every negative is about to devour me, or that I shall fall apart when things don’t go my way.  Rather, go with the flow and see what happens.  Like me, you may be very surprised at the results.

GO DADDY HAS TO GO!

By Shirley M. Carolan

After a beautiful and very busy summer I ran into problems with “Go Daddy” for my website hosting.  I’ve not been able to resolve a simple mistake despite a certified letter to the founder, Mr. Rob Parsons on 9/3/2013 and email to their President.  Neither man responded to my request for help.

It seems when I came out of the hospital last February my domain name and web hosting were up for renewal.  I thought I had checked the appropriate renewal boxes and paid them for continuing service for my WordPress website.  Somewhere near the end of August I discovered Go Daddy had removed my website.  When I called them I was finally informed that the renewal hosting box was not checked but a new hosting box was?

To think something so simple as applying my funds from the “new” hosting box (which I don’t have)  to my “renewal”  account would be so complicated is absolutely mindblowing!  Now they want $150.00 in fees + penalties to resurrect my website, and extra money to resurrect my domain name.

I’ve been a customer of Go Daddy since 2007 with the same website and hosting package.  Now, the parting of the ways has come.  I need to start afresh with a new, simple  website and hosting package.

I sincerely miss all the folks, from all over the world, who have been with me since the beginning and have sent me wonderful comments about my article, seminars and book.  I hope it won’t be too long before I am up and running again with a whole new website and hosting company.   I have some great articles that I want to post and get your feedback on.

Stay tuned!

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES RUNS AMOK!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

Several weeks ago I was getting ready to donate some clothing and household goods to one of my favorite charities:  Goodwill Industries (in my local town).  Lo and behold Scott Pelley on the 6 PM news ran a story about the misdeeds of Goodwill Industries International who pays its disabled employees less than minimum wage, in fact some are getting less than .22₵ an hour.   I could hardly believe my ears I was so stunned.  I waited a few days expecting to hear more news about this dreadful situation and I held up my donation.

There has been no follow up that I am aware of, so last week I decided to check out some websites on my own.  Sure enough several carried stories about Goodwill Industries and its mis-treatment of employees going back several years.   Where have I been living?  Do I only read or hear what I want to read and hear?  Some of the websites I checked out were:  www.CBS.com,www.Snopes.com, Ariana Hufffington Post, www.Wikipedia.com.

Part of the problem is that Goodwill Industries uses an antiquated method of determining payment to its employees, i.e, using a provision of the federal labor law to pay workers with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage, i.e. Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938.  Goodwill counters that these folks would not have any employment or income but for them regardless of how low the pay is.

This situation has definitely soured me on a charity I loved, shopped at, as well as donated to over many years.  It’s not like finding out there’s no Santa Claus or Tooth Fairie after all.  It’s far more serious and I hope and pray Goodwill will take positive action to correct this horrendous situation quickly.

As a result of the above, I have called DAV (Disabled American Veterans) locally to come and pick up my donations.  They are also an excellent charity and I love hearing the ads Gary Sinese has about them and all the good they do for our veterans.

I’d love to hear from you about your thoughts on the above.  Thank you!

THE GREAT DEBATE – TOASTMASTERS

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

My Carlsbad Toastmaster Club, Tick Talk Toastmasters, recently held a Club debate. The topic was “The Pros and Cons of Physician Assisted Suicide.”    While it is a controversial subject for many, I felt the participants excelled with dignity and compassion, and expertise in researching while sharing their feelings on this important subject.  I also feel this event will be  the highlight of our Club’s year.

Leading the debate was Deborah Corey who provided participants with Karl Popper Debate  Rules.  The debate was comprised ten parts. Six of these consisted of speeches (uninterrupted presentations by a designated speaker). The remaining four consisted of cross examination, i.e., a series of questions and answers involving one speaker from each side. There were two teams, each with three people. One team took the PRO position, and the other took the ANTI  position.  This enabled participants to focus on the core elements of a controversial issue while giving them an opportunity to follow the Karl Popper Debate Format:

•   emphasize tolerance for multiple points of view
•   emphasize the development of analytical thinking skills
•   instill in participants an appreciation for the value of teamwork

Pat Rarus was our moderator who kept things moving making sure our speakers kept within their allotted time frames and brought the meeting in on time!  We also had two evaluators giving their feedback to each team.

While I personally subscribe to the “Five Wishes” concept of how I want my final days to flow and have so notified my physician, I was deeply touched and impressed by the arguments on both sides of this controversial debate.  Their persuasion skills were outstanding.  It is also the sort of program that needs to be videotaped so future members can see how well rounded communicators we are at Tick Talk Toastmasters.

THE FIVE WISHES WORKSHOP

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

April, for me, ended with a bang!  One of the perks of living in the Golden Triangle (Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista) is that the senior citizen centers have such excellent activities to enjoy and are for every lifestyle.  Once a year the Carlsbad Senior Center holds a workshop entitled “THE FIVE WISHES.”   This workshop is presented by the Elizabeth Hospice of Escondido and I attended it last year.  I liked what I heard and expected to take some action to complete my “Five Wishes”  workbook.  I never got around to doing that …

February this year an emergency hospital stay made me realize the importance and necessity of having my “Five Wishes” workbook completed, and signed by my respective designees.  So, when I heard that Carlsbad was offering this workshop again I dropped everything and signed up.  I even gave up the COPD physical therapy class that day in La Jolla to do this!
So what is the “Five Wishes” workshop all about?  Basically it encompasses the following:

1.     Listing the person I want to make “care decisions” for me when I can’t.
2.    The kind of medical treatment I want, or don’t want.
3.    How comfortable I want to be (when I reach the end of my life)
4.    How I want people to treat me.
5.    What I want my loved ones to know.

Obviously, the last three wishes deal with my personal, spiritual and emotional wishes.  And by filling out in detail what I want to happen in the event of terminal/sudden serious illness, auto accident, cardiac arrest, etc. I will be helping my family, doctors, health care providers, friends and others in knowing what my wishes are without placing added burdens on them.  This is also a wonderful booklet to use if you are thinking about donating any organs when you pass on.  It should be signed and witnessed by two other people, and a copy given to your M.D.

The Five Wishes is for anyone over 18 years old, married, single, parents, adult children, and friends.  We were supplied the booklet at the workshop but you can order it for a nominal fee through:  “Aging With Dignity” www.agingwithdignity.org. I’ve just given you a bird’s eye view here but there is so much more to read and learn.  Our presenter, Theresa Gallegos, was outstanding and had a great sense of humor!  She can be reached at:  760-519-1441 or www.elizabethhospice.org.

For you curious folks, the Five Wishes began with Jim Towey who worked closely for 12 years with Mother Teresa.  For one year he also lived in a hospice which she ran in Washington, DC  This first hand experience inspired him to write the Five Wishes.  It has received overwhelming response and has been featured on CNN,  NBC’s Today Show as well as Time and Money magazines.

Good luck and I hope you will check this out.
