HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2011!

Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

As we wrap up the year 2010 I can honestly say “It was a great year of learning on many different levels for me. Most importantly, I learned not to second guess anyone or any situation. I learned that stress can bring on another bout with shingles, so I need to stay cool and not let anyone push my buttons! Hence, it’s important for me to avoid toxic people and stick with those who support me and who I enjoy supporting. Finally, I am aware that Life is not a dress rehearsal!

Yes, I’ve been procrastinating on writing the great American novel. I’ve been too busy being critical of my writing style and thinking I’m not enough to be taken more seriously. What rubbish and how demeaning these thoughts can be. Now, I’m willing to launch some metaphysical/self-help eBooks that I truly believe will benefit others.

In the New Year I intend to have more fun, stop being so critical of myself, enjoy all my writing efforts, and spend more time with my oil paints and canvases because those two wonderful talents help me get centered and stay in the NOW.

All my doctors gave me high marks for greatly improved health. Much as I wanted to deny it because I didn’t reach my goal of walking 1-2 miles daily, sans walker and oxygen by Christmas. But, at least I treated myself to a walker and get around my neighborhood with my little Shih-Tzu, Krissy, just fine. This Holiday Season we were both dressed in red. When folks stopped to chat with us, I told them to be careful because “The Redcoats are coming!” This brought out big laughs and comedic talent, even from total strangers.

I can honestly say that I will look back on 2010 with benevolence and gratitude for all the people who touched my life, who helped me without my asking for help, and who encouraged me to share my gifts with others. Since, even my doctors said my new addiction, Genealogy, is a great opportunity to keep the little grey cells active, I’ve also decided to write and conduct some workshops for seniors who need to learn the blessings of being active, and getting in touch with what truly excites them. There is so much I want to share, from the lessons I’ve learned from my own life, and now is the perfect time to do that.

May 2011 be a wonderful year for you, for our planet Earth, and especially for our armed forces, wherever they may be! May this New Year resonate with peace, love and happiness for all!

2010 - YEAR END REFLECTIONS!

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS ALIVE AND WELL!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Gas stations are not exactly known for their outstanding customer service especially if you’re not a regular customer. Imagine, my surprise to find an exception. Driving down Hwy. 5 to a recent doctor’s appointment from Oceanside, CA I saw a red light flash on my dashboard panel – OIL!

H’m this could be truly dangerous if I overlooked it or waited until I got back to Oceanside from Encinitas. Much as I hated to stop at any gas station I didn’t normally patronize I knew I must. So I pulled into the first gas station I could see as I exited the freeway in Encinitas– O’Brien Station at 310 Encinitas Blvd., Encinitas.

We’ve all heard stories about little old ladies (and I’m 77) being sold the Brooklyn Bridge by unscrupulous folks and I was dreading they’d tell me I needed a new engine, main gasket, etc. I tried to hide my fears as I walked inside the gas station for help and my tale of woe. I was warmly greeted by one of the O’Brien brothers and told him I needed gas and someone to check my oil. His brother came out to help me fill up my tank after I handed over my credit card. There are two O’Brien brothers, Bo and Devon, both 6 footers and quite handsome. Whichever one served me was unaware that my walker and oxygen tank where strewn across my backseat. (I didn’t want to look like a total victim after all).

He filled my tank to the amount I suggested not a penny more and told me to drive around the back and either Tony or Edgar would help me. When I got to the back of the gas station I was surprised to see so many women customers, all ages, there. One was getting a smog inspection, another some engine work, and another was just leaving after some work was completed.

All the inside pits were taken up so I parked along the side wall. While waiting, one of the O’Brien brothers called through from the front of the station to ask me if I was being helped. I said “Yes, Edgar is going to take me next.” Tony was still busy with another woman customer.

Edgar heard my tale of woe and opened the hood, checked the oil and said I needed a quart of oil. I said “How much is that?” waiting for the other shoe to drop. He said about $5.00. Whereupon I promptly told him to put it in. While finishing this he checked my water and brake fluid. Then I asked him if my tires were low and he checked them and put air in all of them! I asked him how much his service would be and he said there was no charge whereupon I gave him a nice tip.

While Edgar was tending to my car, Tony came over to say hello and regaled me with stories of England and my home town, London. He travelled there for over 9 years with an electronics company and was once stranded at Heathrow airport on Christmas Eve and said that no planes could take off after midnight. Hence, he and some other travelers bused it over to a nearby pub and celebrated Christmas!

I went to the front of the station to pay my bill. The full amount was less than $20 for gas and the quart of oil was only $4.33. I just couldn’t believe my good fortune to receive such excellent and joyful service from a gas station I had never visited before.

You can bet I will return whenever I am in the area. I feel like I’ve found some new friends and would like everyone, especially women, to know about the O’Brien station crew. Do me a favor and try them and let me know how you were treated.

Yes, folks, customer service is alive and well at the O’Brien Gas Station!

‘TIS BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

We’ve probably all heard the old adage ‘Tis Better to Give Than to Receive.” But until we actually put it into practice they are probably just empty words. Sure, receiving is fun but the sense of well being, gratitude, and happiness you get from giving or helping others, especially those less fortunate than us, is truly phenomenal! It’s something you can’t put a price tag on, It’s a feeling of overwhelming joy!

This is a great time of year to put that old adage into practice! This Tuesday I had the opportunity to do just that. I planned and mapped out a route that took in three of my favorite recipients all located in Oceanside, California:

“Welcome Home Ministries” off Mission and Barnes Avenue. They help women coming out of jail to get back on their feet and re-entry into society again. Those women need just about everything because most only have the clothes they stand up in. I usually take gently worn suits, jackets, slacks, tops, shoes, handbags, they can use for further court appearances, or interviewing. But, this time I also had some Holiday and evening items. The Reverend Carmen Warner-Robbins heads this group. You can also call 760-439-6381 for more information.

Next stop was the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA located at 2905 San Luis Rey Road, (760) 757-4357. I had some worn, queen-size woolen blankets and some open dog food and biscuits. Unfortunately, they could not accept opened food but were very grateful for the blankets and thanked me profusely. As usual, before I left I toured the facilities. Tears rapidly filled my eyes as I went from cage to cage talking to these beautiful, sad and lost animals. If I could, I would take and board all of them because they are all God’s creatures. I know when my little Shih-Tzu, Krissy, passes on I will be back here to take a little one home with me.

My last stop was the new Oceanside El Corazon Senior Center just off Oceanside Blvd. (760) 435-5300. I had 25 books to donate to their Library. The gentleman who helped me told me to look around and see if there were any books I’d like to trade. Forty five minutes later I emerged with four wonderful books, a mystery thriller, a metaphysical book, an autobiography and a political expose. Wow, these were truly a win-win situation!

As the Holidays approach, I hope I’ve given you some ideas on how you can help others. The beauty is that you don’t have to go out and buy things from scratch and spend a lot of money. Rather, you can donate items you’ve already bought and had fun using. There are always people in the wings, less fortunate, who would love to have your second-hands.

As I finally drove home I was on a real natural high, the kind you can never get from medications. I smiled to myself and said, Shirley “Tis Better to Give Than to Receive!”

FUN WITH GENEALOGY!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

I must confess I have a new addiction – GENEALOGY! Last weekend I spent time at the Georgina Cole Library and the Carlsbad City Council Chambers in Carlsbad, California. Saturday included a 9 AM-3 PM seminar “Beginner & Refresher Genealogy Class “ presented by the North San Diego County Genealogical Society. Speakers included Margaret Reid and Marti Meiners. Topics included: Getting Started, Record Keeping, Census Records, Wills & Probate, Land Records By the end of the day I was hooked on genealogy!

What was even more amazing is that there was no fee or tuition for this seminar! Yet we had so much information given to us by experts, including brightly colored packages with pages of resources and references. There was only a small “donation” jar at the back of the room if we wanted to use it.

These dedicated women used a Power Point presentation of slides to give us even more information and examples of how to go about finding out who are ancestors were.. To say it was fascinating is an understatement.

On Sunday, we were graciously invited back to the Carlsbad Library by Margaret Read to learn how to access computer/on line databases/sites available to the general public to do further research. The entire upper floor of the library is dedicated to geneology: Books, CDs, computers, printers, reference desk, maps, etc. Perhaps the most exciting thing I discovered is that I can access all the databases at the Library with my Carlsbad library card, at no charge, from the comforts of my home! This saves multiple trips over to the library, wear and tear on my car and gasoline savings! It also means I can be at this 24/7. H’m, now is that addicting or not?

By the end of the weekend I joined the North San Diego County Genealogical Society for only $25.00 membership. I am also thinking of investigating The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) since I was born in London, England. They are very active here in North County. If you are American born you might like to check out The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

I hope I’ve spiked your interest to investigate your ancestors! For more information on all the classes, seminars, speakers etc. contact the Carlsbad City Library Genealogy Desk: 760-434- 2931, or www.carlsbadlibrary.org.

LIFE IS VERY GOOD! ...

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

October certainly exceeded my expectations in learning new things, meeting new people, making new friends, collecting a horde of books at annual library book sales, and receiving many requests for either articles I've written or posted on my blogs from folks all over the USA. I am truly tickled to be alive at this time.

This week two important events happened: I decided to raise the handlebars on my walker to see if that made any difference in my walking and back pain. It sure did! I can't believe the positive impact it has had on my health. I feel so much better and my posture is more erect, instead of leaning forward when I walk. This simple action has also relieved the low back pain I felt 24/7, especially when going to bed at night. I would literally cry out in pain as I lowered myself onto the mattress. That has now all gone and I'm ecstatic! Now my goal is definitely to be rid of the dependence on the walker altogether. I've set a new goal to be independent of it by Christmas. Whether that's realistic or not we'll see...

The 2nd event was the disappearance of my little Shih-Tzu, Krissy. I came home from my Carlsbad Toastmaster Club Thursday night, after a brief stop at Ralph's to pick up some items, and opened my front door with my arms loaded about 9:30 PM. Krissy came bounding out as she usually does when I arrive home to greet me. I put the groceries away thinking she would come right back in. I called her but no Krissy. H'm. At 10 o'clock I put my oxygen tank on, got a flashlight and extra batteries, and started out with my walker to look for her. I slowly combed the neighborhood flashing the light under cars in driveways, etc. No luck. I left the front porch light on all night and put a bowl of water on the step in case she came back and I had fallen asleep.

At midnight I was besides myself with anguish and jumped in my car and drove all over the neighborhood again searching for her. Nothing! Trying to sleep was useless. At 4 AM I dressed warmly and got flashlight and walker and headed out again. It took me a little over an hour to comb my neighborhood and still no luck in finding Krissy. I prayed God would keep her safe from the coyotes that roam around here.

Returning home exhausted, I sat on my sofa and turned on the TV. The 5 AM news came on. I couldn't believe how cheerful the newscasters were. It was almost obscene to me because I'm usually in deep dreams at that hour. About 5:45 AM I heard a small patter at the front door. I jumped up and lo and behold there was Krissy! I forced myself not to be mad at her, scooped her up in my arms and was astounded to find out she was bone dry! Meanwhile, I was soaking wet from perspiration and the light drizzle in the early dawn. She looked none the worse for wear and gave me that look "well, now you're up why don't you feed me!" At that point I would have given the little bugger anything she wanted.

Early Friday morning I cancelled her grooming appointment because I was so exhausted. I have no idea where she went or, if she will try that again. But, I am pleased she knows her way home and will be much more careful when opening my front door in the future.

Until you lose something, or someone, you often don't know how much it means to you. I think of Krissy as the daughter I never had. She's my true family and companion. I feel so blessed that God sent her safely home to me. Now I won't take her for granted anymore! Be sure you let those close to you know how much you love them! You never know when it will be the last time that you see them.

INCREDIBLE GROWTH MONTH!

By Shirley M. Carolan

September has turned out to be a month of incredible personal growth and health challenge. I had wanted to post another Recap of one of my Toastmaster Club meetings that I write. It follows. I will also be sharing my new project with you that I am very excited about shorly. Meanwhile, enjoy the recap!

RECAP OF SEPTEMBER 9, 2010 MEETING

Our Pledge of Allegiance got started on time by a very dapper Sgt.@ Arms, Jonathan Enerva. It’s good to see Jonathan taking his new role so seriously.

Pat Rarus did double duty tonight in the absence of President, Pat Partin. She conducted the Business Meeting adroitly reminding us of the Humorous Area Speech Contest on Sunday at Watkins Manufacturing in Vista and Debra Simpson who will represent our Club. She also introduced our new Treasurer, one of our newest Toastmasters, Carol Sheckler. Congratulations Carol for stepping up to the plate! Pat Rarus was also the Toastmaster of the evening. We had two guests: Ginnie Donaldson, a very stylish and upbeat resident of Carlsbad by the Sea, and Josh Hartman. Also, it was good to see Darrell Fulmore again after a long absence!

Pat then introduced our Table Topics Master, Jonathan Enerva who chose “curriculum” as the word of the day. Jonathan had some truly fascinating and challenging questions tonight with stacks of books to back up his theme. Shirley Carolan won the trophy for Best Table Topics.

We had two very good speakers tonight: Carol Sheckler and Richard Rettig. Carol gave speech #10 from the basic manual: “Flowers Just Bloom.” She also gave us this poem as a handout which is something all can enjoy. Richard Rettig did a departure from his usual speeches by giving a speech from the Advanced Story Telling Manual : “A Gnome.” It was quite humorous and kept us on edge until the finale. Unfortunately, both our speakers ran overtime.

Cindy Parker was our General Evaluator and introduced our two evaluators: Shirley Carolan and Dan McKeon. Shirley evaluated Carol Sheckler’s speech giving her high marks for following all the objectives of her speech giving her some improvement tips and even complementing her when she forgot her lines. Dan McKeon did a very thorough and helpful evaluation of Richard’s speech. Shirley Carolan won the trophy for Best Evaluator.

We had several new Toastmasters as functionaries tonight. They all did an outstanding job in their respective roles. Scott Trulove gave a masterful report as Grammarian. Leo McFall manned the timing lights and Darrell Fulmore was our Ah Counter.

Ginnie bade us farewell early but Josh remained to give us high marks especially after visiting other Toastmaster clubs. Methinks we have a new member in the wings here!

Till next time,

THE JOYS OF TOASTMASTERING

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

One of the most important constants for me for the last 29 years has been my membership in Toastmasters International. I enjoy everything about Toastmasters and Toastmastering. It has brought me untold joy, confidence, poise, knowledge, education, the ability to think clearly and organize my words, both written and oral, to share my knowledge and mentor others, courage to compete in annual contests, lifelong friendships and of course a feeling of satisfaction, of a job well done. You might say it is my passion!

As a result of all of the above, I’d like to share with you what goes on at a Toastmasters’ meeting and perhaps encourage you to investigate a club either where you work or live. As the VP or Public Relatons for my Toastmaster Club, Tick Talk Toastmasters, I write weekly recaps of our meetings, i.e., who did what, who won what, etc. Hence, I’ll be posting recaps of our meeting regularly here, starting with the Labor Day weekend. .

RECAP OF SEPTEMBER 2, 2010 MEETING

On the cusp of the Labor Day weekend we had a full house last night. In fact, I’m still jazzed by it. We had 4 guests: Gail Dillon made a return visit, Bob Parsons, aspiring actor Austin Auger, and our new Area 18 Governor, Henry Heller. Also, Ana Santiago visited us again and was our Grammarian. Welcome all. The theme of the meeting was “Labor Day Weekend.”

President Pat Partin conducted a brief business meeting and installed 3 new members into Tick Talk Toastmasters: Carol Shekler, Leo McFall, and Scott Trulove. Congratulations all!

Richard Rettig was our Table Topics Master. He asked some very thoughtful and provocative questions. He chose “Toil” as the word of the day. It was great to see all of our guests participate. Area Governor, Henry Heller won the trophy for Best Table Topics. Good job, Henry!

Pat Partin was our Toastmaster of the evening. She introduced our lone speaker, Bobby Van Hollebeke giving speech #3 from the basic manual. Bobby gave an enthusiastic account of his beloved Padres, told us about their humanitarian contributions to society and stressed that we should support them.

Shirley Carolan was our General Evaluator and introduced our lone evaluator, Andrea Patterson, who evaluated Bobby’s speech. She praised Andrea for the many Toastmaster roles she has undertaken recently.

Shirley gave us high marks for our meeting tonight stressing that we did “jolly good!” She mentioned that when you are the Table Topics Master to be sure the “word of the day” is large enough and dark enough for those in the back of the room to see it. Also, she suggested moving the flip chart out of the way when Table Topics are completed. She did not participate in Table Topics but she did mention that the word “Toil” was used by English Prime Minister Winston Churchill during WWII when he said “I have nothing to offer you but blood, sweat, toil, and tears!” She was a school girl in London at the time.

Stepping up to the plate as our Timer was newcomer, Scott Trulove. Well done, Scott. Jonathan Enerva was our Ah Counter and Ana Santiago was our Grammarian!

After Pat Partin distributed the Best Speaker, Evaluator and Table Topics awards she called on guests for their comments on our meeting. We got good reviews from all of them. Our new Area 18 Governor, Henry Heller, reminded us to attend the Area Contest on September 12 at Watkins Manufacturing and asked for volunteers. Please check the time of this contest as I got it wrong in my last recap!

Lastly, Pat Partin called on Ronnie Bierner for some light hearted humor to cap our holiday meeting. Ronnie reluctantly demurred to Shirley Carolan who told us about a king and a fairy tale… Aw, shucks.

SHINGLES REVISTED!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since I first broke out in Shingles blisters. But that is so. I’ve since had many opportunities to regret my cavalier attitude when my doctor first asked me, at the beginning of 2009, if I’d like to have a Shingles vaccination and I immediately said No! without asking what Shingles is and how severe can it be.

Shingles is not something to mess with! I am still suffering from some symptoms of it to this day! Sometimes the itch is so unbearable that I just scratch myself to pieces, at times even drawing blood. Sometimes the pain is unbearable … My doctor has prescribed 3 different salves, all to no avail.

But, I’ve come a long way in this past year. I look back and remember that if something dropped to the floor, even a pencil, I was unable to bend down and pick it up, so covered in blisters was my waist…Even daily setting down my Shih-Tzu’s food and water dishes was painful. Today, I can at least bend down and retrieve almost anything from the floor. I can do small gardening jobs. Why I can even vacuum, or mop, the house!

I tell myself that it could be worse. I could be in an assisted living place with limited mobility and immediately I am grateful for what health I do have. And when I get really down I take out the photos from a year ago and look at the terrible mess I was in. When I see all down my back and across my waist to the middle of my chest, the horrible blisters I can appreciate why my doctor told me I had one of the worst cases of Shingles she had ever seen!

It is my fervent hope that by sharing my ordeal with you, particularly if you are over 55, or, your know of someone who is, that you will urge them to get the Shingles vaccination! You, or they, will be so glad you did. To live in daily pain, or itch, is very debilitating and depressing. It can rob you of energy and living a normal life. Why take that chance. Life is too precious and much too short!

THERAPEUTIC GARDENING!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

This summer, I am finally getting back to enjoying my garden as well as light pruning of bushes and small trees. So different from last year when I couldn’t move or do anything without oxygen. I feel truly blessed to be able to be outdoors admiring nature. I do have a handyman do the heavy work, plus picking up the branches and leaves, which I can’t do yet.

Gardening, for me, is truly therapeutic. I had not realized how much I missed it. Unlike my mother who hated gardening, which I could never understand all the years I lived in an apartment.

I repotted several small plants on the outdoor windowsill of my living room, and the white wicker table on the patio. The reds, pinks, yellows are just gorgeous! I even tended my palm trees and fed them.

It’s also amazing that while indulging in this small pleasure the number of ideas that have flittered through my mind for articles, or chapters for my book “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over!” It’s like getting a bonus for something I enjoy doing anyway! Maybe working with one’s hands has its own rewards? When I feel I’ve had enough, I’ll take a short rest and then go back to my computer and crank out drafts of things that came to me while gardening. I’m never disappointed. Sometimes it may be some questions to ask when next I am the Table Topics Master at my Toastmaster Club.

If you don’t have a garden, don’t fret, houseplants, which I have all over my house, are also fun to work with, talk to and enjoy. I love all the different styles of pots my plants are in and get enormous satisfaction knowing I can redecorate with them.

Now, if only I could get off this oxygen full time! I'm working on it!

CARLSBAD PSYCHIC FAIRE

by Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Yesterday, I visited the Windmill and the Carlsbad ”Holistic Living Expo” affectionately known as the Psychic Faire and had a marvelous time and learned a lot. I went to 3 free mini seminars: The Yuen Method of Energy Healing (later had a free healing) by the Rev. Marcella Jones; Palmistry-the Ancient Art and Science of Hand Analysis, by Kathlleen Robertson, CLC and, Esoteric Numerology, by Merry Street, which I'm very much into. I learned to include your middle name when using numerology, which I had not done before and which changed my personality, heart, and expression numbers.

I also bought 2 books: "10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace" by Dr. Wayne Dyer, and "The Birth, Life, Ministry, Ascension and Coronation of Mary, Mother of Jesus" which I've not been able to put down, it's so fascinating and I have a much different concept of who she was and is!

This time, instead of gem stones I bought several scarabs, one made from limestone which the Pyramids are made from. I probably will add some to some jewelry that I design.

As I glanced at my watch I saw it was after 5 PM and I knew I had to get home to my litle Shih-Tzu. Hence, there was no time for a private reading from Kathleen Robertson on Hand Analysis, nor Merry Street on Esoteric Numerology. So this is unfinished business in my life which I will pursue. Kathleen is from LA and her website is: www.TheHandAnalyst.com. Merry is from San Diego and her website is: www.MerryStreet.com. Both have ongoing workshops and events.

Don’t feel badly if you missed the Carlsbad exhibit because the Holistic Fair will be in Newport Beach and San Diego in August. For more information about this wonderful event, people, and services please go to: HolisticLivingExpo.com and you may even download a free admission pass.

There was so much to see and learn that I did not have time for it all. So, I’ve made a promise to myself to henceforth start out earlier in the day and just enjoy everything. Hope to see you at the next Expo!

Cheers!

WORDS, WORDS AND MORE WORDS!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

This year is certainly flying by with summer now upon us. As many of you know I am passionate about words – both spoken and written. I even coined the phrase “Words are the poetry of the soul. They are as unique as your fingerprints You owe it to yourself to leave the finest imprint™”.

With that said, I don’t think I’m any closer to writing the great American novel! Maybe that’s because I write non-fiction pieces and have not researched potential markets for some of my material. Or, maybe it’s because the month of June saw me reading avidly, at least two books a week. You might say that’s not a lot but I truly devour words as I read chapter after chapter.. When I get to the end of the book I ask myself would I have ended it that way? Most of the time I have to say NO! And then, I torment myself with how I would end the book.

I think to be a good writer you have to also be a good reader. There are so many authors out there and so many different styles. Characters are also very important to me, including their names. If I can’t associate the name with the character, or the character’s deeds, words, thoughts, then I get frustrated. But that’s fairly rare, whether I read a murder mystery, autobiography, political and religious intrigue/scandals, historical novel, etc..

If the story has truly resonated with me then I like to contact the author, either through their website, publisher, or snail mail and tell them how much I enjoyed their book and ask them if they have another one in the works and when it will be published. Some authors only want to be contacted through their publisher and that’s OK too. But, I do get a thrill when I can contact the author direct and write/ask some questions that may have come up for me when reading the book and they, goodnaturedly, respond.

Once I’ve finished a book I ask friends if they’d like to have it, if not, I put them in a box and haul them off to the local senior center. The senior center is always happy to receive them. Last week I took 15 books to the new senior center in Oceanside, CA. It felt good to recycle something I’ve enjoyed and had a lot of fun hours with..

Local libraries and thrift shops are also a good source to recycle your books. I even buy books from these places and the cycle continues. It helps me to also get rid of some of the clutter even though I have plenty of books and shelves that might say otherwise..

I hope this will encourage you to pass your books along. Meanwhile, keeping up with all my books helps me to think about and write the great American novel!

TOASTMASTERS STRUT THEIR STUFF at LEGOLAND

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Last week I had the privilege of conducting a workshop with two fellow Toastmasters from my club at LegoLand. Following is the report I wrote.

Recently, Tick Talk Toastmaster Club 2113, Carlsbad, CA was contacted by LegoLand to see if they would be interested in conducting a brief presentation on the “Art of Public Speaking” to tsome of their management team. They specifically wanted to know the components of putting together a good speech and the fine points of delivery. They were also interested in how and when to use audio/visual aids effectively.

Three advanced Toastmasters rallied to the occasion: Marc Weyl, who handled the audio/visual portion; Shirley Carolan, who spoke on the importance of good organization and “Substance, Style and Staging;” and, Pat Rarus, who spoke on “How to Use Humor” effectively, and appropriate grammar and word usage! A question and answer session followed each presentation.

If “a picture is worth a thousand words” then Marc Weyl did an outstanding job of designing his slides and using a laptop computer to convey the latest in technology and how to use it effectively.

Shirley Carolan, a freelance writer, well-known for her English accent, captivated the audience with vocal variety, gestures, and enthusiasm.

Pat Rarus, a marketing professional and former English teacher, showed her talent with words, grammar and lively humor.

Thus, each Toastmaster brought something unique to the overall presentation, complementing each other and Tick Talk Toastmasters! They stressed the importance of Toastmasters in their personal and professional lives, what growth they’ve experienced and risks taken as a result of their Toastmaster membership. Pat Rarus gave an overview of what Toastmasters is all about and Shirley Carolan held up “The TOASTMASTER” magazine, highlighting the additional benefits of membership.

All agreed that this was a win-win presentation. LegoLand got to hear presentations from some top-notch Toastmasters, and Tick Talk Toastmasters got a bold opportunity to promote their Club. While this was the first time Toastmasters joined forces to give their all to promoting their Club and increase membership, it certainly won’t be the last!

A TOASTMASTER’S BIRTHDAY!

by Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It’s not always possible to spend our birthday with our family. So, the next best thing is to spend it with supportive friends. I feel so blessed to have the friends I do both within and outside Toastmasters International.

Thursday was my birthday and it started with a bang! I opened my front door to walk my little Shih-Tzu and there was this beautiful card from a neighbor wishing me well. As I returned home, another neighbor dropped by with a lovely gift with writing on the outside of the bag “Fabulous You!” Besides the lovely gift was the smallest birthday cake I’d ever seen with a beautiful gold bow flowing from it!

Later, a Toastmaster friend dropped by with a Happy Birthday balloon and a super card. Since Thursday night is my regular Toastmaster Club meeting night, in Carlsbad, CA and I was the Table Topics Master for the evening, I knew I would be with great company to celebrate this birthday.

At the intermission they wheeled out this magnificent, iced, birthday cake! They presented it to me with a birthday card signed by everyone! Who could ask for more? Well, would you believe they insisted I take home the small piece that was left. I didn’t have to be asked twice.

Throughout the evening, various dignitaries mentioned some tidbits they’d found out about me to share with the audience, through my blogs and website! I was tickled. It felt like a jolly good roasting!

Yes, this was one undeniably special birthday shared with some very special people and friends. Here’s to many more!

THE TOASTMASTER MAGAZINE

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

This may sound like a pitch for Toastmasters International and that’s OK with me. I’ve been a member of this prestigious organization since 1981, having joined in the San Francisco Bay Area. Folks, that’s 29 years of wonderful association and it has been one of two constants in my life since that time. It has been both a lifesaver and a catalyst for personal and professional growth!

Today, instead of just promoting this organization I’d like to express my deep gratitude for its wonderful, glossy, informative magazine. I believe this magazine is the unsung hero of our membership even today! I think Forbes, Smithsonian, Entrepreneur would envy its world-wide distribution and readership.

But don’t just take my word for it. Please visit the Toastmaster’s International HQ in Rancho Santa Margarita. Guided tours are available daily from 9-4 PM. More information is available at: www.toastmaster.org. or (949-858-8255). When I took my family for a visit they were amazed at the plethora of information and help there. I was both overjoyed and overcome when I saw our beautiful glossy magazine neatly stacked for shipment to countries all over the world, (106 countries to be exact) in Spanish, French, English, German, Italian, Japanese! It was an awesome sight and I felt proud to be associated not only with a wonderful organization, but also this wonderful magazine.

Whether you aspire to become a professional speaker, or are a manager, supervising others, in sales or marketing, “The Toastmaster” magazine has worthy information in each issue that will benefit your professional and personal life! It keeps up with the latest in technology, trends, and language.

Members seem to take this magazine for granted but if you can get your hands on a copy of one you will appreciate and understand why I feel so strongly and positively about it. In fact, you will be glad you did!

LIONS CLUB SPEECH CONTEST

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It’s that time of year when Toastmasters International and various civic organizations are having their annual spring speech contests. It’s a great opportunity to hear some of the finest speakers around.

I particularly enjoy being asked to participate in the civic organizations as a judge for the young men and women competing at the various levels for scholarships and recognition. I feel a great sense of pride when I hear these teenagers meticulo sly explain their position on matters of vital interest to the public.

March 14, 2010 was no exception as I participated as a judge at the Lions Zone Level of competition. The subject was "Healthcare, How Will it Affect Us?" It was so apropos in view of the recent healthcare package just signed by President Obama. Each candidate did a thorough job of researching and reviewing voluminous material, pro and con, and presented that information to the audience with grace and aplomb! It was hard to believe they were teenagers and not seasoned politicians in their delivery and content!

There were three competitors: Emily Gilden, Vista, Gavin Curtis, Carlsbad and Yujia Pan, Carlsbad. It was a very tough and tight competition. Yujia Pan was declared the winner and was presented with a $100.00 check for her efforts.

Yujia will now compete at the Lions Regional Contest on April 11, 2010 at the Ed Brown Senior Center in Rancho Bernardo (18402 W. Bernardo Drive)starting at 1:30 PM. If you qualify as a judge, or, want more information regarding the Contests, please contact: Sandy Mangini at (760) 436-7338, or sandysseabluff@cox.net, or Victor Gonzalez, Region Chair at (858)673-1974..

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

How many times have you been told by a well meaning friend, spouse, neighbor, teacher, doctor, minister, etc. to remember that there’s an elephant in the room? What never? For example, maybe you have said to someone “I feel tired all the time,” or, “I’m going to go on a diet and lose some weight,” or, “I’m going to start walking 2 miles a day,” only to have that person tell you something negative that you’re forgetting about, or reminding you of some limitation that makes it impossible for you to achieve that dream?

Personally, I am sick and tired of doctors reminding me of my AGE! Or, being told that my AGE is to blame for such and such. In other words, AGE is the “elephant in the room!” What rubbish! I may be a senior citizen but if I truly believed that I might as well order my coffin now!

Recently, I told two medical specialists that I’m tired of living at only two speeds: no energy, and low energy. I want to get back physically to walking 2 miles a day without oxygen and without a walker, where I was a year ago before coming down with complications from pneumonia.. One doctor said “Well, that ain’t going to happen!” The other said “Well, you’ve got to remember the elephant in the room!” When I asked him what that was he said “Your AGE!” What a cop out! What rubbish!

I have friends my age and older who play tennis, go sailing, hike, etc. enjoying life and without giving a thought to their age. .You’re as old or as young as you feel! AGE is not the problem when you constantly fall down, lose your balance and break bones, as I have done. The elephant in the room for me has been leading a sedentary life style and not by choice! It’s hard to exercise or run around the block when you feel tired all the time.. It’s obvious that weak muscles are the culprit, not AGE! When you sit all day, whether reading, at your computer, or watching television, your muscles are not being used! Hence, they can atrophy! When you walk, get out of a car, go upstairs, etc. you are using muscles!

I’m doing a lot of research about balance and weak muscles and how to improve both. The world wide web is loaded with information on these subjects. I’m also taking a FREE 6 day Ecourse, with exercises to improve my balance and use my muscles. The course is designed by Mike Ross, along with videos and exercises you can do immediately. Check it out at: www.thebalancemanual.com/ecourse.html. Mike is an exercise physiologist who specializes in senior health and fitness. He has a degree in Fitness Management and is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Also, I’m thinking of starting a support group for folks who have trouble with their balance and constantly fall down. While older folks are more likely to respond, it is not limited to them because some younger folks also have balance problems. More on this later.

Lastly, I urge you not to give your power away to AGE, or well meaning folks, or doctors who tell you to “remember the elephant in the room!” That’s their opinion. Thank you very much. What’s yours?

NEW MANTRAS TO LIVE BY

by Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Don’t know if I’m waxing philosophical as I age but through some unlikely and unsolicited sources I came across some sentences whose meanings literally resonated with me. Words are so powerful; they conjure up a variety of emotions and moods. Hence, it’s wonderful when bon mots cause you to stop and think about how you are living your life and if that’s in accord with your master plan.

I want to share these wonderful words with you now because they may spur you on to do a quick analysis of your life today and see if It is in sync with your vision.

The first came from Maria Mar’s newsletter, see www.catchthedreamexpress.com/newsletter/february2010.htm and was part of some promo material for Ted Karam’s new book “Jumping on Water:” ‘Do not give your power away to your circumstances.’ It stopped me dead in my tracks as I reflected on how disappointed and angry I’ve been at myself for not being able to recover my health quicker. However, I had no idea how debilitating shingles can be. My doctor told me it had to do with the “elephant in the room!” When I asked him what that was he said “Well, you’ve got to remember you’re not 24 any more. It takes longer for older folks to recover.” H’m, that surely didn’t apply to me did it?

I never think of my age as a detriment to anything! But, I had wasted an inordinate amount of time and energy bemoaning my poor health. And, sometimes I was aware of that and other times not. I had to admit finally that I had “given my power away (many times) to my circumstances” and that had to stop. I’m not an invalid after all!

On the bright side, however, I congratulated myself for buying a 4-wheel walker, with folding seat, lightweight and extremely serviceable, on January 29, 2010. This may not seem like a big deal to some, but for me it’s better than buying a new car! I was shopping at my favorite Thrift Shop and spotted it. I decided to take a stroll with it around the store. I was amazed at how much more territory I covered without the usual huffing and puffing when I used the cane. H’m. Next, I thought about shopping in the supermarket and how I get around so well with the shopping cart to help me keep my balance and keep moving. I also purchased a nice basket that attaches to the walker and holds my oxygen tank.

Then I knew, I had to buy the walker! I said to myself this could mean more freedom for me. Right now I can’t even walk my dog a block with my cane without huffing and puffing and having to return home. Even Krissy, my little Shih-Tzu, enjoys a ride on the seat the last block before arriving home. As of today, I’m excited to be walking all around my neighborhood. I am up to walking a mile a day with my walker and without the oxygen tank! My short term goal is to walk 2 miles a day with the walker, and, without any oxygen. My long term goal is to walk 2 miles daily, as I did before, eventually without the walker or oxygen!

The beauty is that I bought this walker for a song and it’s given me a new lease on life and new found freedom! I can’t help wondering though if the doctors had advised me last year, when I first got out of the hospital to buy a walker would I have done so? Methinks not. Regardless, I am now a master of my destiny instead of a victim of my history!

The other bon mots I feel worth sharing with you came in an email from a friend with a cartoon. Unfortunately, I am unable to upload the cartoon. Here it is: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” Isn’t that beautiful! I was absolutely tickled by it. It conjured up memories of Gene Kelley in the movie “Dancing in the Rain.” Regardless of what’s going on in life at any moment, if we can learn to “dance in the rain,” I think we stand a good chance of surviving the worst case scenario. It’s truly worth thinking about.

As you’ve probably guessed, I’ve blown up both these wonderful sayings and have posted them near my computer, in my bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, etc. I feel they are great new mantras to live by. Do let me know what you think!

ANNIVERSARY REFLECTIONS

by Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

I’m fast coming up on the anniversary of my bout with pneumonia which escalated into complications and an emergency trip to Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, where I remained for 10 days.

Hard to believe a year has almost passed and my life has changed so much. Prior to this my health was never a problem. I thought I was invincible! After all I’d done four (4) Firewalks with Tony Robbins in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s and had a lot of tools to work with. Still taking risks in my mid ‘60s and moving from my beloved San Francisco to North San Diego county, sight unseen, no job, and no friends yet.

But, I knew I had a multitude of skills to fall back on. The only problem was I hated marketing myself and I took to using my office/administrative skills, landing me back in the “secretarial ghetto” which I’d struggled most my life to escape! When folks asked me what I could do, I’d proudly announce that I could and have done everything but dig ditches! Yes, I could paper the wall with all the State licenses, certificates, diplomas and education I’d worked so hard to achieve. But, something was always missing… I think I’ve got a handle on that now.

I’ve reinforced some positive beliefs about what my life is about today and I’ve let go of the anger, resentments and disappointments of bygone days replacing them with gratitude and forgiveness, particularly of myself! My mother used to tell me as a child growing up in England “how much she and Dad had sacrificed to give me the finest education money can buy.” I no longer have to feel or prove that I am worthy of something I could never repay, no matter how hard I tried...

This past year has been quite a learning curve since I am still somewhat limited in my physical activities. And, coming down with Shingles last August which still affects me, was the icing on the cake. Patience was never my strong suit but I’ve had multiple lessons this past year to get on top of that, including another emergency visit to Scripps Memorial Hospital last month.

Today, I don’t take myself, or any of my possessions, so seriously that I can’t enjoy what’s going on in my life on a daily basis! Now, that’s progress, at least for me! Now I can work on some other bad habits that only I can change. Even if I have to wait awhile for some lesson to surface, I’m ready for the challenge!

Bon jour!

STRESS/COMPUTERS & TECHNOLOGY

By Shirley M. Carolan

Recently, I discovered how much a slave I’ve been to the Internet, emails, and on-going newsletters and classes covering a variety of subjects. I also pay all my bills on line, and totally forgot how I used to pay my bills before on-line banking became available.

That’s the technology side of it. I’ve also been a slave to my computer as well. It seems my whole life was wrapped around my computer and the latest technology although I doubt I would ever admit that.

Two weeks ago I experienced a warning sign on the computer screen telling me I had been infected with a Trojan horse by a computer company called “Personal Security.” Since I was on-line at the time I chose to call my ISP to see if they could help me… Maybe not the smartest move but I’d just found out that my 2-year extended warranty with HP had expired when I thought it was good until November 2010! But that’s another stressful story.

Meanwhile, it was the beginning of a two week ordeal whereby I spent hundreds of dollars, wasted hours, daily waiting for various technical support people to help me. Every time I thought I had the problem solved something else would go wrong necessitating more expense, time, and waiting. MY ISP finally recommended I get a “recovery disk” from Microsoft, since I had not backed up my new laptop when I received it as my Christmas gift to myself December 07. I opted to have them send it Fed Ex wracking up still more expense.

Then the modem broke down and AT&T informed me they would replace it but I would incur fees, plus shipping and handling. It would take another 4-5 days before I would have the new modem…

On the 5th day of this saga, I found I had trouble breathing. I called my doctor and was told to immediately go to Scripps Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, in Encinitas, CA where I spent the rest of the day, until late evening, hooked up to oxygen and IV tubes. After x-rays, EKGs and blood work I got to meet Dr. Pheifer. Bottom line: he thought the shallow breathing was a result of stress, gave me a prescription for steroids, and told me to see a pulmonary specialist immediately. Mercifully, this time I was not admitted to the hospital and couldn’t wait to get home to my little Shih-Tzu who was now at home in the dark...

It would take another week before all the problems were fixed. I decided to take my laptop to Computer Geeks to have them assess the problem. Four days later I had my computer back. There was no Trojan horse, virus, etc. just a defective boot up to Windows. I was now ready to hook up the new modem to it.

I finally did hear back from the technical support people I had contacted and paid upfront to have them fix the problem. One of them even offered to refund the $139.99 they had charged me because I was never able to get through to them. Also, I had decided to remove Norton software from my computer and go with McAfee and start afresh. It took some doing and I was apprehensive about using a different software, having been with Norton for over 25 years! But, I knew I couldn’t handle more complications and delays.

AT&T did stay in touch with me, even though there were many times I could not get through to their Tech Support. I explained that the stress had caused me a health problem necessitating a visit to a hospital emergency room. They were most understanding and sympathetic. They even waived the $100 fee for the new modem, charging only shipping and handling, and told me to call them immediately I received it and they would walk me through the installation. I was grateful for their follow up and quick action because I was seriously considering a new ISP too.

The moral of this saga is: I finally admitted to myself that I am a survivor! I had survived the “Battle of Britain” having been bombed out of London during 1940. Now my mantra is “Unless something is a life threatening event, I am not going to let it put me in the hospital! Particularly if it’s a piece of equipment!” Nothing, but nothing is worth losing my health over.

Funnily, I don’t rush to the computer several times a day to check my emails any more. If I check them just once a day and that’s enough! I’ve also dropped several on-line newsletters and websites. It’s amazing the peace of mind I’m discovering by taking my life and my power back! I am no longer a slave to a piece of equipment that used to run my life!
