XMAS DRAMA

By Shirley Carolan

The Christmas holidays can be a stressful time for some people and this year I certainly felt the stress... Imagine Christmas Day answering a knock on your front door by two youthful looking police officers. But, I’m getting ahead of my story.

Actually, I’ve delayed writing about this because I felt embarrassed and then a bit ridiculous that these two policemen were seriously checking up on me when I’m sure they had more important things to do.

Two days before Christmas, December 23rd to be exact, I fell out of bed that morning, hit my head on a dresser and took a good punch in the left cheek from the edge of the dresser as I felt myself in slow motion going down for the count. Utterly dazed, and quite scared, I gradually pulled myself up, not an easy thing to do considering I have a pin in my right shoulder holding it together.

Was anything broken? Judging from the pain I wouldn’t be surprised. I hotfooted it to the bathroom to take a look at my face. From my left cheek to the jaw line was the beginning of a huge black and blue bruise. My heading was pounding as though I had a concussion. My right elbow had the beginnings of a huge bruise, and my left kneecap was bleeding and quite raw… It was obvious I’d done myself a mischief!

Once back on my feet, I blithely carried on as best I could reminding myself that the year would soon be over and hopefully all the illnesses would be behind me. At least I felt optimistic that this would be so.

On the Monday before Christmas, Dec. 23rd, I received a lovely gift from my twin brother and his family, which Fed Ex had been kind enough to leave at my door. It was from “The Fruit Company.” I immediately got off an email to thank them. Alas, unbeknownst to me, they never got the email!

Christmas Eve I ran out of eggnog and decided to hightail it to Ralph’s to get some more since they would be closed on Christmas Day. I also decided it might be the last time to take photos of some of the beautiful house decorations in my neighborhood since some folks take down their decorations early. So, I packed my Shih-Tzu in the car and with my digital camera took some photos as I circled my neighborhood, All told, I was probably gone less than an hour.

During this time, my answering machine took two phone messages: my nephew had called me from Newport Beach to wish me a Merry Christmas and half an hour later my twin brother called ditto. I was totally oblivious to this. Instead, I came home to enjoy my eggnog!. It was a little after 9 PM. Maybe you’re the kind who checks for messages frequently but I am not so I was to learn an important lesson.

Christmas Day I awoke to beautiful sunshine and took Krissy, my little Shih-Tzu, for her early morning walk. As I got to my front door I said to myself “I’d better check my phone messages and than get on with my day.” Lo and behold I saw the red light flashing indicating their were phone messages. I played them back for the first time. My brother sternly informed me that since they had not heard from me he felt he had no recourse but to ask the local police station if they would please check up on me to make sure I was OK.

Quickly, I got on my computer and emailed him that would not be necessary and I resent the email from December 21 to him. I am grateful that I’ve learned to keep copies of all my emails to my family…just in case. I thought that would be the end of it.

Then I heard the knocking on my front door. Everybody seems to miss the fact that I do have a chimer. Nevertheless, the policeman said to me “I guess you know why we’re here?” I nodded my head and told him what had happened. Then I noticed I’d left my dog’s leash on the outdoor rattan chair and my house key was still in the lock. And, of course I looked a dreadful sight with all my black and blue bruises. I couldn’t imagine what the police must have thought…perhaps some ol’ gal on the border of dementia? It was a comedie francais!

My brother never received my Monday email thanking him for the gift and I was unaware that I had two phone calls from them the night before while I was out shopping for eggnog! I apologized profusely and thanked the police for their courtesy. I even asked them if they’d like a copy of the resent email to my brother...

I guess the moral of the story is to always check to see if you have any messages from anyone especially if you have left your home however briefly!

Till next year, Happy Holidays everyone!

THANKSGIVING …

By Shirley M. Carolan

November has got to be one of my favorite times of the year. We are so blessed here in Southern California to have great weather – usually sunshine, making it possible and inviting to visit the wonderful Pacific Ocean and stroll along the beach dressed in summer duds. I’ve forgotten what it was like to live in cold New York all those years.

It’s interesting how different climates celebrate holidays differently. I used to look forward to watching the Macy’s Day Parade, rain or shine, but now, I can enjoy it on television from miles away and then head for the beach .,,

This year I have much to be thankful for, I’ve gained new friends, survived 10 days in hospital with pneumonia and now am healing from shingles. Gradually my health has improved. I’ve just started physical therapy twice weekly through the end of January to help rebuild strength in my muscles, back, stomach, legs, so that I can learn to walk upright instead of hunched forward parallel with the sidewalk. Eventually, I expect to be able to walk 2-4 miles a day again!

This Thanksgiving I spent with a special friend who took me to many doctors appointments when I could not drive. It was very festive, beautifully decorated and welcoming. I was even told to bring my little Shih-Tzu, Krissy with me. This meant the world to me. When it was time to come home she packed me up with enough goodies to last a week.

November is also a special time to take advantage of the many bargains in Dept. stores, etc. I never thought I would succumb to this folly but when I saw that “Michael Brothers” was having terrific art sales, on just about everything in the store I couldn’t resist. My eyes spotted a wood box table easel for $79.99 on sale for $29.99 and if you purchased it before 12 noon on Friday, there was a coupon for 25% off your entire purchase, making this wonderful easel only $22.50! What a steal!! I couldn’t resist and could hardly wait for morning to arrive. Of course, once in the store there were other art supplies I thought I needed and with that precious 25% off the total purchase price who could resist?

I came proudly home with my purchases and immediately set up my new easel and started painting in earnest. I painted for two hours before I realized how tired I was. Today, I’m paying the price for all that activity but it was well worth the “stretch.”

During my illnesses this year I’ve missed my oil painting lessons, visits to galleries, whimsical assignments and of course, my classmates. I couldn’t even hold a brush to a canvas I was so weak or in pain when I did. But, lately I’ve started to finish canvases from bygone days and it’s been a blessing as well as very therapeutic!

My other favorite activity is public speaking and my Toastmaster Club. I rejoined it two weeks ago and I am thrilled to be a part of this vital organization again! It keeps me on my toes mentally and I love the interaction with other members! I think I’ll post the recap of our last meeting next.

Before I forget, Thanksgiving Day has special significance for my family and I. On November 27, 1947 my father, mother, twin brother and I boarded the SS AMERICA at Southampton, England and emigrated to the United States. It was Thanksgiving Day that year! Wow, that was 62 years ago!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING everybody!

PSYCHIC FAIRE - CARLSBAD

by Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Last weekend the Psychic & Holistic Living Expo opened in Carlsbad. If you missed it you missed a wonderful opportunity to learn, interact and buy from many vendors displaying gem stones, jewelry, geodes, clothing, also psychic readings, aura photos, singing crystal bowls, several healing modalities, mini-seminars on many topics where questions were invited, etc. But, don’t worry it will come again next spring to Carlsbad.

I spent the afternoon there and had a fabulous time! I bought three semi-precious stones, two books, had a psychic reading, and an energy healing!! That’s a lot of mischief for one afternoon. Also, I met some old friends there too.

It was a smaller Fair with new vendors. The young couple I bought the gemstones from are from London, England (Hampstead) the same area of London as me!! Jeremy heard me talking about shingles and checked his book and suggested a stone, Fluorite, noted for its powers to help heal infections, cells, bones, DNA damage, etc. which I bought. This wonderful stone is also effective against computer and electromagnetic stress.

Next, I bought some Labradorite, a stone of transformation. Lastly, I bought a piece of Selenite – it cleans/clears stones, negative energy, and stimulates physical healing, etc. It will also clean my entire collection of stones, especially of any negative energies. Since I am out of sage sprigs Selenite will be a great substitute to use! You can find out more by going to www.energygems.com . I wanted to spend more time at this booth but the Faire had so much to see and hear that I finally bid a fond adieu.

There a many folks giving different psychic readings at these fairs but I’ve always thought the energy from so many attendees could affect the reading. But this Sunday, the noise level and shoppers seemed much more subdued. Hence, on stopping at a booth in a great location I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself to a reading by Angela, The reading was most interesting and it will be a pleasure to see what manifests! What I liked about Angela is that she does not go by the clock, (as so many psychics do) rather she takes her time, asks questions, and is very easy to talk to. Angela’s website is being revamped but she can be reached at: (949) 350-5369.

Interestingly, she said Jakey (my little Pug/Terrier) was my husband in another lifetime. Perhaps that’s why I wrote a book about him and all the lessons in life that he taught me. Today marks the 7th anniversary of his passing.

Next, I had a wonderful Chinese Yuen healing session with the Rev. Marcella Jones. She is a certified Yuen practitioner of the Yuen Method of Chinese Energetics. I’ve known Rev. Marcella for many years. We had a great visit and I truly appreciated her generosity if spending time with me and giving a healing. She goes from the cellular to the quantum level. (That should help my shingles which is now in its 10th week!). Rev. Marcella has a very busy schedule and can be reached at: 619)283-4782.

Since I am an avid book reader and collector I couldn’t leave the Faire without looking over the array of books they had, all I might add at 50% off! After much soul searching (no pun intended) I bought two books: “Tarot Journaling” by Carrine Kenner (who uses the Celtic cross to unveil your hidden story). The title interested me because I read the Tarot and also present seminars on “Journaling For Success!” Coincidence? Methinks not. Carrine’s lived in Brazil, the twin cities of Minnesota, and now the Midwest. I also noted that she got her BA from CSU Long Beach.

The other book that fascinated me is “The Standing Stones Speak,” by Natasha Hoffman and Hamilton Hill. After visiting Stonehenge, England in 1996, I’ve had an on-going interest in the true meaning of Stonehenge and other monolithic stones throughout the world. This book was written through channeled writing and is very metaphysical. According to its authors, “It unifies the underlying wisdom of Christianity, Buddhism, and the Sufis. It interprets the lives of the great teachers and recounts the dark history of Atlantis…..”

All in all, a wonderful afternoon spent seeing and learning new thoughts and ideas. These are just a few highlights of the Faire. I even got in free because I downloaded a guest pass which they emailed me. For more information on this wonderful event and other cities where they go contact Dean at www.HolisticLivingExpo.com. Hope to see you next Spring in Carlsbad !

“HAPPINESS IS … “

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

Happiness, or success, means different things to different people and that’s OK. But, little did I realize I would ever equate doing humdrum housework with happiness!! Nay, success!

As many of you know, on August 17, 2009 I broke out in hundreds of brown lesions down my back, half way across my waist, and up over my right breast. I was horrified because I’d never seen anything like it. A week prior, I had felt a “strangling” sensation in my lungs like someone was crushing me to death. On August 14 x-rays gave a different diagnosis. Then on August 18, my doctor finally confirmed I had shingles!

Perhaps you’re bored by hearing this, but nine (9) weeks later I am still suffering the horrible burning/itching and soreness that this disease inflicts 24/7 on its victims. Tomorrow, October 20 I see a nerve specialist to see if he can numb the nerves in my back! I sure hope so because enough is enough!

If you are over 60 I highly urge you to get the “shingles vaccine.” I was offered it earlier this year by my doctor but declined thinking I’d never get that disease! This is one disease you don’t want to get.

Back to my story. Last Thursday, I was determined to do some menial housework like washing my kitchen and bathroom floors! They had not been done since just before my illness and I was ashamed of how dirty they were. (These floors are very tiny, maybe the size of a postage stamp). Nevertheless, it proved a real challenge for me. Also, I had to bend down and lift “stuff” off the floors that I had not been able to put away. Anytime I tried to bend down to pick something up I was in excruciating pain and had to give up!

What would normally take me about 30-45 minutes took me a few hours ... I could not keep my oxygen tank on because it was too heavy. Fortunately, I used a product called “mop and glow” that did not require any rinsing after applying and also leaves a nice shine. After cleaning a few squares of linoleum I had to sit down and rest. Hence, it prolonged the project. But my elation upon completion and the sense of true accomplishment were exhilarating!

Now, I go into my kitchen or bathroom and just look at the floors. I am thrilled to see them so clean. And, the beauty is that I did it myself for myself! Nothing can replace the feeling of satisfaction you get when you know you’re not a victim of circumstances! That you can take care of yourself regardless of the situation, even if it may take a little longer..

I forgot to mention that I also vacuumed my living room and dining area same day. Again, I had to take it in stages but it eventually got done.

When somebody comes to visit me now, I am not ashamed if they use the bathroom, or I go into my kitchen and offer them a cup of tea. Ah yes, happiness or success is being able to take care of yourself in your own home when you have the strength and willingness to try.

QUIGONG TO THE RESCUE!

bY Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It is hard for me to believe that I am coming to the end of my 5th week with Shingles!! I don’t ever remember ever having such a debilitating disease, and, it certainly can’t be compared with the Chicken Pox I had as a child. While many of the lesions have healed many still have not, which means I still experience periodic stabbing pain and incessant itching and a terrible burning sensation.

However, I took advantage of another, wonderful, long distance (free) healing session with Michael Mohoric on September 13. As the session began, I felt a warmth start in my feet, up my legs, and through the rest of my body. It’s remarkable, when you think that for days my feet had been ice cold, especially at nght. But I was either too tired, or too lazy, to get up and put socks on!.

Gradually, I became aware that the incessant itching and burning that I experience 24/7 had lifted. I was amazed and in awe of this revelation. I had not been free of these symptoms for a month, they were my constant companions, and now I sensed an unusual freedom from them. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, it had been so long since I felt like a normal person. Shingles had taken over my life! My body still looks hideous from the lesions, and I don’t know how much scarring will remain.

However, I still have occasional bursts of pain, burning, and itching, but nothing like the 24/7 symptoms I am used to experiencing. My doctor said I had a virulent case of Shingles and now I believe her.

Today, I am grateful I can drive my own car anywhere! I can shop for groceries on my own, and take myself off to doctors’ appointments, etc. Over the weekend, I even did laundry for the first time in 6 weeks! And, I sat at my easel and dabbled with my oil paints for about 2 hours! Something I’ve not done in months. I still get very fatigued after a couple of hours even though I’m on oxygen 24/7. But now I am listening to my body and not my head!
Gradually, I am getting my life back together but I need a lot of patience too. Maybe that’s my lesson to learn.

Meanwhile, if you would like more information about Quigong and the wonderful sessions Michael Mohoric conducts, please visit his website to learn more: www.qigongenergyhealing.com, or email him at mohoric9@gmail.com. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you, especially if you’ve ever had Shingles or have some good home remedies for it.

THANK GOD FOR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

As many of you know, I’ve just completed my 5th week of suffering the agonies of Shingles! Mercifully, I’ve turned the corner of this debilitating disease. While I still experience the occasional stabbing pains and incessant itching, it has lessened considerably in intensity and duration! For that, I am most grateful. To say that my personality has suffered is putting it mildly! My little dog no longer recognizes or listens to me! She sees me as some out of control moaning monster. Little does she know she is responsible for my even getting out of bed every day! Hence, she’s become a big part of my recovery.

But, I am also very grateful to friends and neighbors who rallied behind me and offered many services and help, e.g., driving me to doctor’s appointments, x-rays, lab work, etc., picking up prescriptions, driving me to the supermarket when I could stand long enough while clutching on to a cart for balance; others brought me home made soups, dinners and desserts! I am so blessed to have these folks in my life and hereby thank them again: Willeen Hassler, Darlene Siddons, Bev Hodges, Judy Carlisto, Barbara Cornell and Rudy, Louis and Bob Tharp, Gail Stillman and Bergie and Jack McClendon, to name a few. You all brought joy and hope into my life.

Today, I’m listening to my body and not my head! If I feel tired I will rest until I can carry on again. This week marked some precious milestones for me. I was able to drive myself to my doctor’s office and took my little dog with me. The freedom I felt was wonderful! On Friday, I got out my oil paints and some canvases and started painting again! While it only lasted 2 hours, it felt good to use my hands again. Saturday, I did my first laundry in 6 weeks – tons of sheets, towels, pillowcases, etc. Prior to this, I couldn’t even bend down to pick up a dropped pen or pencil I was in too much pain. I couldn’t even pick up the laundry it felt so heavy. While it might seem trivial to some, it’s a major milestone for me.

Each day brings me more independence, increasing good health, and gratitude for everyone and everything in my life. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who prayed for me! The power of prayer is well known and the results are unmistakable!

Ciao,

SHINGLES? WHAT’S THAT YOU’VE GOT?

By Shirley M. Carolan

As summer comes to a roaring end I, too, feel like I’m going up in flames and itching. I thought shingles was for young people, not senior citizens like me! I can’t repeat what the last two weeks have been like – agony, the tortures of the damned! Why try to be poetic about it, it’s been pure hell.

Yes, I’ve been under a bit of stress but this is ridiculous. Who doesn’t have some stress today? What started out as excruciating chest pains, like someone was turning my lungs inside out finally evolved into a full blown case of shingles! Ugly brown blisters that itched and burned simultaneously.

Be compassionate to anyone you know with this illness. It is not for cissies. I’ve not felt like cooking or eating so my doctor suggested I buy “Ensure” a drink with lots of vitamins, etc. If you can take your friend with shingles a home cooked meal, by all means do so. You will be reaped with eternal gratitude. Better yet, if you can walk the person’s dog, by all means offer. My little Shih-Tzu just doesn’t understand. I try to explain it to her but she just looks at me with those big brown eyes and cocks her head.

Just as I was getting ready for teaching my classes “Journaling for Success” and “The Dynamics of Goal Setting” at the new Oceanside Senior Center I get hit with this. This week should see a turning point in my battle with shingles!

Meanwhile, please keep me in your prayers! Thanks.

QIGONG ENERGY HEALING

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Little did I realize there can be wonderful healing benefits from using alternative medicines. Traditional medicine does its best trying to heal our bodies and minds. We learn to accept and live with a diagnosis handed down by our doctors and specialists. It’s almost like we are a nation of sheep when we go in for the final diagnosis to a baffling illness, and blindly accept the prognosis!

I remember vividly how I felt on July 9, 2009 as I left the pulmonary specialist’s office in Encinitas, CA with his verdict ringing in my ears … I felt devastated, almost worthless! He told me I had emphysema and would need to be on oxygen for the rest of my life. Plus, I would have to continue both high powered, high priced medications daily. Seeing my distress, he said “Well, at least it’s not cancer!” That did little to improve my mood.

I stood outside his office door unable to move. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I tried to console myself that I had had a "good innings” as they say in England! After all, I was 76 years old and should be grateful for all the things I had accomplished… Then it dawned on me that I am a survivor. I had survived the Battle of Britain and came to America with my parents and twin brother to start a new life.

Then, a poignant memory flooded back to me from Spring 1981 when a doctor informed me “I can’t help you. You are an alcoholic. I’m sending you to AA. Frankly, you’re too sophisticated for them but I don’t know where else to send you!” Little did he or I know what I survivor I am. I took his diagnosis on the chin, went to an AA meeting and have been clean and sober by the grace of God for 28 years!

Hence, with that powerful memory and strong determination, I thought to myself “Doctor, thank you for sharing (your opinion) but you don’t know me. I’m going to beat this rap!” That’s when I got an email from Michael Mohoric advising or another, free, Qigong Energy Healing session on Sunday, July 19, 2009. I was besides myself with joy! I immediately contacted Michael and told him what my latest medical prognosis was and how I wanted to beat this rap!

Folks, without going into a lot of detail, MIRACLES are happening in my life! Each day brings new support and wondrous healing! I owe a deep debt of gratitude to Michael and his Qigong Energy Healing methods, as well as other holistic modalities that I use. If you would like to learn more about Qigong and its wonderful healing properties, please check out Michael’s website: http://www.qigongenergyhealing.com, or email him at mohoric9@gmail.com.

“WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY THE TEACHER APPEARS!"

By Shirley M. Carolan

How many times have I heard that tenet, or, given it lip service? Innumerable. July has turned out to be one of the most exciting months of my life. Every time I turn around another Aha moment manifests itself. I know there are no coincidences in the universe but as I’ve changed old habits, beliefs, and values to honor myself more, an article, book, seminar or CD has appeared talking about that very subject. It’s almost like a validation of my actions.

For example, last week I let go of something and some people who were very dear to me. Something triggered my taking a closer look at the relationship and I knew it had become toxic. I thought it would be painful parting ways but it was not, because I let them go with love.

I realize that everything in the universe is energy and we each vibrate at different energy levels. Sometimes we try to give a gift to a person vibrating at a different energy level from ours and that person cannot accept the gift because they do not see the value in it… alas, because they do not value themselves.

While I’ve purposely left names and events unsaid I trust you get the message. Our feelings are very important and should not be swept under the rug. Many years ago, in London, England, just after WWII, I attended a girls’ boarding school. I can vividly remember a lay teacher (Ms.Kelleher) telling me “I’m not interested in your feelings. I’m interested in your thoughts!” I was eleven years old at the time and have never forgotten her or her admonition. As a result, all my life I’ve stuffed my feelings and downplayed my skills and talents…

Hence, last week’s action on my part is a gigantic leap forward, a true act of faith! If you’d like to read a wonderful article that came across my computer yesterday, regarding “toxic relationships” by Maria Mar, then please go to David Riklan’s website at www.selfgrowth.com

Meanwhile, I’m still journaling on and celebrating other powerful Aha moments this month that are rapidly changing my life. I look forward to sharing these insights with you shortly.

OCEANSIDE SR. CENTER DEBUTS!

By Shirley M. Carolan

One of the perks of being a freelance writer is that I get to write about my community, Oceanside, California. This city, by the magnificent Pacific Ocean and breathtaking harbor, can now boast a beautiful new Senior Center. It is the second senior center in this growing populace.

Why am I raving about it so much? Because ever since I moved here from San Francisco, in 1997, I’ve heard about and waited for the “powers to be” to sanction it. I know, twelve years is not a long time for such a project to manifest. Others have waited far longer than I. But, I am very happy and grateful that it is now fait accompli!

The Grand Opening took place on June 6 and was presided over by Mayor Jim Wood, and councilman Mark Feller among others. Attendance was expected to be about 500 people but it must have reached at least 2,000!

It was a very festive occasion with a society band, folks dressed in exquisite evening attire and ladies in bejeweled evening gowns dancing to the sound and songs of the Big Band era! I was transfixed by memories of dancing to the Dorsey Brothers at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Yes, that was my era, and I’m proud of it… when you could actually understand and swoon to the words being sung!

Why have I waited so long to report this happy event? I was lucky enough to capture two beautiful women dancing in all their finery. One was 93 years young, and dressed in a gorgeous black, bejeweled evening gown! The other, was dressed in a romantic lavender evening gown with exquisite hat. Unfortunately, I did not get their names and, not being a techie, I have been unable to get their photos uploaded to my website and blogs. But I will keep at it!

Meanwhile, I urge you to check out this wonderful new facility. It is located not far from my home, right off Oceanside Boulevard and Plaza del Oro, in the new Corozon complex. It boasts the latest in gym equipment, a fitness center, spacious classrooms, a grand cafeteria, which will serve hot meals come the Fall, computers, an outdoor patio for various events and, of course, a friendly and courteous staff!

It is well worth a visit when you are next in the area. I’d love to hear from you when you do!

Ciao!

Meetings are held the first Monday of every month, tentatively set at various locations within Carlsbad and the North Coast area from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. This is not an established organization. Any suggestions you may have will be most welcome.

If you are interested in meeting on a regular basis to hear these talks, please email us at the.bard1564@gmail.com, or follow on us on Twitter (user name: "shakes_votaries") for upcoming details.

GIFTS OF RECOVERY!

BY Shirley M. Carolan, ATMG

As we wrap up May, I am astounded at all the books, newsletters, blogs, and eBooks I have either bought or subscribed to in the last two months. In the next few weeks I’ll be sharing some links with you to free eBooks on subjects ranging from the metaphysical to the “how to” e.g., “Program your Subconscious Mind, Fear of Money and Success in Freelance Writers, Keys to Phenomenal Self Confidence.” But first, I want to be sure that all the promises are sincere before referring these links to others. Hence, I will be busy doing a lot of the exercises in each program.

I’ve read eight books in the last two months and passed several on to others. They’ve ranged from strong mysteries - psychological thrillers to church intrigues and murder such as “The Secret Supper,” by Javier Sierra which I could not put down, to “The Jesus Papers,” by Michael Baigent(which has me spellbound). Then the two books on Hillary Clinton, one pro the other con, “The Case For Hillary Clinton” by Susan Estrich, and the other by Edward Klein, whose title I now forget since I’ve given the book away.

I won’t get into all the new blogs and newsletters I’ve discovered but they are a treasure trove of ideas and possibilities. So stay tuned because I’m sure I’ll be passing on more information that you might be able to use (at no cost).

Perhaps it’s just as well that I’ve had some “downtime” else I would not have discovered so many new things, people and ideas. I’m excited about the 2 phone calls I got this weekend about starting two completely different groups in north San Diego County. There are folks with a plethora of ideas out there that I did not know existed before.

Once I am totally recuperated from the after effects of pneumonia and being on oxygen 24/7 I am sure I will look back on this period of “downtime” as the catalyst for the beginning of a whole new life and friendships! I already feel blessed so it can only get better!

Yes, there’s a golden lining, or lesson, to learn even when things don’t go our way, if only we can find it! Stay tuned!

CONVALESCING IN STYLE!

By Shirley M. Carolan,ATM-G

This is not my usual post. I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself. I never imagained the day would come whereby I'd have to put my life on "hold." A part of me is very grateful to be “on the mend” and gaining more strength daily. Another part of me says “Bah, Humbug!” you’re not that sick! Well, I found out this week, when I saw the pulmonary specialist, that age and body have their own agenda for healing. Despite my wishing otherwise, I have to acquiesce to the good doctor’s counsel.

To say that he read me the riot act is putting it mildly. When I asked him if I could go on jury duty in June he got apoplectic and said “Absolutely not, you’re recovering from a severe lung disease and must stay on oxygen 24/7 for another 2-3 months! “... It was no good fighting with him and so I knew other activities I’d planned on would have to be curtailed too.

I know a part of my problem is that I never planned on ever “retiring,” and to have an enforced “down time” is anathema to me. Of course, I know that has its roots in childhood when I was never allowed to be sick! But this is pure agony for me. Yes, I’m reading a lot of books and downloading all kinds of goodies from the internet but that’s not quite the same as gadding about. I miss my Toastmaster Club, friends, and all the weekly activities.

This week I will be celebrating birthday number 76! I don’t know how I got to be this old because I really feel I’m in my late 20s. The one good thing about looking in the mirror at myself is the white hair. I used to pay good money in San Francisco to get this color and now it is natural! Toastmaster friends are taking me out to dinner for my birthday and I’m really looking forward to it.

So, instead of complaining, I guess I’ll get my “Gratitude” journal dusted off read it and start adding some new ideas and things that I am grateful for. This week both my little dog, Krissy, and I had minor surgery. She’s a little trouper despite the fact she’s only 12 pounds. I don’t know what I would do without her. Now, she’s something to be grateful for!

Adieu!

MIRA COSTA COLLEGE AWARD

By Shirley M. Carolan

Last Saturday, April 25, 2009, I, along with many others celebrated the Annual "EXPRESSIONS" Awards from Mira Costa College. Many art caategories were honored, from poets, writers, digital works, and beautiful drawings and sketches by continuing education students. Our work can now be seen published in the Spring 2009 "Expressions" yearbook from Mira Costa College.

It was a very festive day with artists, friends, colleagues, teachers, and scrumptuous refreshments. I feel so honored that my work was selected and that I got to read it in front of a live audience. Following is my poem. I hope you enjoy it too!

HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN
By Shirley M. Carolan

Home again, home again
That’s where I long to be
In the land that bore me
And gave me liberty

Oh, it’s been a long time since I left
That ancestral land
Whose noble virtues
Molded my character and dreams
Whose history saw the Magna Carta
Signed by the king at Runnymede

Oh yes, the New World is
Full of opportunities
and changes everywhere
‘Tis a place of new beginnings
and scenery beyond compare

But it’s home again, home again
To that isle across the sea …
For I’ve done my duty,
And long to rest my bones again
In the English countryside
In quiet anonymity!

OCEANSIDE DAYS OF ART FAIRE

By Shirley M. Carolan

This past weekend Oceanside celebrated its Annual Days of Art Faire. I had it scheduled on my calendar for months and was avidly looking forward to it. Alas, this is the first time in years that I have missed it. I was looking forward to meeting the artists and learning new painting techniques, and,I had planned on writing a wonderful article about the merits of living in North San Diego County, specifically Oceanside.

However, I have a good reason for not making it to the Faire this year. Since I got home from my 10-day hospital stint because of complications from pneumonia, I have been on oxygen 24/7 and tapering off meds. On Friday, April 17, 2009 I “volunteered” at the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League Gallery from 2-5 PM. While it was a lot of fun, and I met some wonderful people from all over the USA I ran out of oxygen on the drive home. I kept my cool and said a few prayers to help me get safely home and to avoid any traffic accidents. My concern was for others as well as myself.

The next day, I was flat on my back and didn’t rise until about 4 PM. I guess I overdid it at the Gallery. I was so intent on telling everyone about the Faire, making sure they got the flyer, and telling them they would see our “Artist of the Month,” Dave Gulewich there. Also, I got about 50% of them to fill out our “People’s Choice” award form so that they would be eligible for a prize at the end of the month. A very busy afternoon indeed. In addition, I locked up the Gallery which was not on the original agenda.

It was then I discovered that my oxygen tanks only hold enough oxygen for three (3) hours which would include travel to and from any event. H’m, I thought the tanks held more oxygen than that but at least I now knew I had to plan any future trips carefully.

Hot weather is not my bag since I’m a transplant from San Francisco. The weather this weekend was indeed hot, some might call it balmy. After much soul searching I chose not to exhaust myself for two hours at the Faire. I missed it dearly and can only hope that all the visitors I met at the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League made it to the Faire especially since I told them I would be there!

If you made it to the Faire, I'd love to hear from you. Meanwhile, here’s to next year’s Faire, Oceanside!

POETRY REWARDED!

By Shirley M. Carolan

Last January, at the encouragement of my art teacher, I decided to submit some poetry in an annual contest that Mira Costa College was sponsoring for its students. It was the first time I had submitted poetry for publication even though I’ve written it for years and kept it to myself.

Today, I received a lovely letter from Lynda L. Lee, Dean Community Education of Mira Costa College, Oceanside, CA advising that my poetry has been accepted for inclusion in the Continuing Education publication "Expressions from Mira Costa." There were 160 entries submitted so this is pretty neat.

Also, I've been invited to attend a special event in my honor on Saturday, April 25 at the Community Learning Center, from 1 PM-3PM, at the college and have been asked to read my work. What fun!

YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR FORTUNE!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

It is with much joy and gratitude that I am now recuperating at home after spending 10 days at Scripp’s Memorial Hospital, Encinitas, CA. I was diagnosed with complications and pneumonia necessitating I.V.s and oxygen 24-7.

Without going into all the gory details, I feel like I am a far different woman than I was at the beginning of the month. I am much more pro-active where my health is concerned, which the hospital encourages its patients to be. I kept a daily Journal of everything that transpired… the good, bad and the ugly! Hence, you will see some articles from me that are both humorous and poignant.

The articles will offer tips to folks faced with an emergency hospital stay, what to take with you, who to notify, etc. Also, pointers on “How to Behave When Visiting Someone in the Hospital!” Yes, believe it or not, many folks don’t have a clue how to act when visiting a hospital! Some of my suggestions are being forwarded to the head of Scripps in the hopes that some much needed changes will take place for the betterment of patients!

For now, I am ecstatic for the health that I have. I realize I can handle any difficulty/problem or stress if I have good health. Health to me is more important than money, relationships or talent. I can go anywhere in the world and enjoy new sights, sounds, spices and savor the experiences when I have good health. Without good health, I am nothing… a shadow of my former self, perhaps even dependent on the good will of others to care for me…

Folks, take care of yourselves and be pro-active when it comes to your health… you’ll be glad you did!

GIVING BACK … is a priviledge!

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

One of the true perks of being a long time member of Toastmasters International is that many civic groups get to hear about you and offer you the opportunity to judge high school contestants using their public speaking skills at the various levels of competition.

This is an opportunity I truly love. It takes me back to my teen years when I represented my high school, Queen of the Rosary Academy, Amityville, NY, in the Long Island Oratorical Championships. I was 15 ½ years old and had emigrated to America just one year earlier. I was a senior in high school. The nuns felt they had a winner in me because of my strong British accent. Alas, I came in second place because the judges said that the American students had to acquire “that accent” (British) in order to be heard distinctly all over the auditorium. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful experience.

February 8 was any opportunity to give back to my community again as a judge.. The Lions Club of Carlsbad held their local public speaking contest. It was wonderful and I was in awe of all the students who participated. They were all talented and unique in their content and delivery. I wrote the following article for local newspapers:

CARLSBAD LIONS CLUB HOLDS CONTEST

The Carlsbad Lions Club hosted its annual Students Speaker Contest on February 8, 2009 at The Granary, Magee Park, Carlsbad. Four students from Carlsbad High School participated. Their topic was “Water – Will California be Left High & Dry?” Each contestant researched, wrote material and spoke for 5 to 10 minutes.
Local Toastmasters, Pat Rarus and Shirley Carolan from Tick Talk Toastmaster Club, Carlsbad, were again invited to be part of the panel of judges and later gave feedback to the speakers.

The goal of the contest is to encourage youth involvement, develop self-esteem, confidence in public speaking and offer financial scholarships for the formal education of the students. For more information on this event contact Elaine Brammel at 760-753-1175, or EPBCMA@aol.com.

Students participating were: Ibriham Keyrollos, Natasha Maldi, Kathryn Allan and Yujia Pan. The winner was Yujia Pan who received $50 and each of the contestants received $25. Yujia will now go on to participate at the Zone level.

CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUSINESS JOURNAL

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

My Toastmaster club, Tick Talk Toastmasters of Carlsbad, California joined the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce last November. This is almost an unprecedented action for a non-profit, educational organization like us to undertake. We did so to boost our membership and attract local businesses and merchants to our club.

We were also asked to write a brief article on public speaking… or what steps to take when giving a speech, without actually mentioning Toastmasters or Tick Talk Toastmasters. I found this assignment challenging to say the least. The first two articles were rejected because they were considered blatant advertising for Toastmasters.

Finally, I attacked it through the eyes of an Evaluator giving constructive feedback to a speaker. Voila, that idea was accepted!. Following is the article I wrote which appears in the February 2009 Carlsbad Business Journal, entitled: “HOW TO STREAMLINE YOUR SPEECHES! “

"You know you’ve “arrived” when someone asks you to give a presentation to a live audience. Whether you talk about your business, products, services, new market trends, or hobbies, the rules are the same.

As a newbie, It is very tempting to want to tell your audience everything you know about your specific topic. But, a word of advice “Less is More!” It’s better to leave your audience clamoring for more than overdoing it with minutiae clichés, pet words, and jargon. The mind and the seat can only absorb so much. Better to save some material for a follow-up speech than to overdo it.

While the topic may be of utmost interest to you, if you’ve not engaged your audience, or given them something to think about, or take action on, then you run the risk of losing them!

Here are some tips, from a 28 year veteran of public speaking, to help you streamline your talk:

• Organize your material. Make sure it has a strong opening, body, and conclusion!

• Rehearse your speech! Make sure you “own the words” before getting in front of an audience. This will help you stay focused, handle nerves, stay within a specified time frame!

• Start your presentation with a quote, statistic, or controversial idea … it’s a good way to grab your audience’s attention.

• Use audio/visual aides: a handout, or miniature CD to give more details or examples.
Use slides, an overhead projector, flipchart, or music to create a mood.

• Wrap it up by asking your audience a question, e.g., “Before I conclude, are there any questions?”

• Tell your audience you’d be happy to send them more information, if they’d like to leave their name and email address at the end of your presentation.

The latter point is an excellent way to follow up with them and to assess if they have a genuine need of your products or services. It is a non-threatening way to market to a possible future client

These are just a few tools to help you streamline your presentation so that it flows, is interesting, and lets the audience know you are an expert on your subject. Hence, Less is More! If you’d like more information, please contact me at: 760-732-0663 or www.ticktalk.org."

IS CUSTOMER SERVICE DEAD? – cont’d

By Shirley M. Carolan, ATM-G

Maybe customer service is not dead after all but it’s certainly dormant in many cases. If you’ve ever experienced poor customer service from a company or institution that supposedly prides itself on good customer relations then you have a right to complain and let them know how you feel. Obviously, it pays to be clearheaded when you decide to let the “violators” know precisely what, when, where, how, who, happened, etc.

Last November I experienced very poor customer service at a local hospital, where I was rushed by paramedics in the early evening hours after a severe fall, requiring x-rays and medical treatment. The discharge was very sloppy, uncaring, and traumatic.

When I later received a letter from them asking me to complete a “patient satisfaction survey” on how well they performed their jobs, I decided to be honest and share what I experienced which meant reliving a painful experience. I thought that would be the end of it.

Lo and behold, on Friday, January 30, 2009, I received a phone call from Mike DeMott, Director of Performance Improvement at Tri City Hospital. He apologized profusely for the staff’s behavior. He also said he would like to read my letter aloud to the medical and office staff at their next meeting. He said it will go a long way to improve their customer relations since it was an actual experience and not a textbook lesson.

I told Mr. DeMott that since the survey wanted me to express my opinions honestly, and that they would be confidential I chose to answer it. I also thanked him for calling and expressing his concern and offering an apology again for the staff’s inadequate behavior.

This episode has restored my faith in this hospital. It wasn’t the first time I’ve received emergency medical treatment there and, it may not be the last. Now, I am over my misgivings and grateful that I took action.

Maybe that’s the lesson to learn – when you encounter bad or rude customer service speak up and let the powers to-be know about it!

SOMETHING NEW’S BEEN ADDED

By Shirley M. Carlan, ATM-G

One of my goals for this year is to add a short video of meaningful clips and music that I feel represents the essence of who I am, what I am, and what I feel is important in my life today. .. my “philosophy of life.” A tall order you might say …very metaphysical indeed. Why that theme instead of something related to your writing and speaking skills? Good question!

After spending many hours at the end of last year assessing what I enjoy about my life and what no longer serves me, I decided to keep it simple and not promote the business side in my video Writing and speaking will always be an integral part of my life, like breathing, and I will continue those activities and promote them separately. .

Lo and behold, after looking at many videos out there and wondering if I should invest in one, I discovered a local source quite by accident. Darlene Siddons is a friend and business colleague who started a video clip business last year, as one of her many successful ventures. I found her website video very inspirational and uplifting and decided that I wanted my own video. What you just saw was created by Darlene. I supplied the sayings and Darlene provided the slides and music and put it all together for me. If you would like more information please contact Darlene directly at: www.spiritedboutique,com., or, 760-.726-8390. She is easy to work with, very professional, creative, reasonable, and wants you to be successful.
